Check out the video…yay Gina!!!

Well I was able to help out a little in the kitchen helping Kelly & Gina with some dessert prep work . It was a lot of fun to be there on the first day of 105 degrees big grand opening. It is really amazing to work in a real raw foods kitchen. It is a face pace environment which I liked. Also, I got to help with some prep work for  the new recipes for Monday! I am really glad to have gotten the opportunity…thank you Kelly!! Also thank you to the rest of the kitchen staff and to Matthew!

Today I was planning on going a long run with Gina, but the weather was not on our side. So change of plans on our run it will become a treadmill run! Now when I run on the treadmill music is much needed to keep me going. It is amazing the effects music can have on your workout.

My pre-workout meal:

A new recipe: Lemon Chia bar

A new recipe: Lemon Chia bar

We have made this recipe before and it was good though just did not come out in terms of appearance. This time around with the recipe we added chia seeds to help hold it together and it worked! Then I also had myself a little chocolate to get me going.

Now onto Music

I took an alternative type psychology class in college where I learned how music really changes your mood and behavior. It was really fascinating and helped me to be more aware of how my music changes me.  Music’s effect on our moods stems from the fact that it appeals to both the left and right sides for our brains. Rhythm, for example, is largely mathematical, and caters to the logical left brain, while heart-wrenching melodies satisfy the emotional right sides of our brains.

Music holds the power to elevate our moods above our worries and relieve debilitating depression. It can also perk us up if we use it with exercise or dance. There have been many studies on how certain types of music can make you feel a certain way, which I could go into great detail but I just want to focus on music before and during you workout or before a big sport event.

Timing is very important because if you play your loud, upbeat, fast music too early before you workout you will exhaust the body to quick. It is best to play the music a few minutes before, remember Michael Phelps in the Olympics? He would listen to “his go to music” as he was walking out to the pool.  The music helps gives you an adrenaline rush.

Music can actually alter your brain wave pattern therefore elevates your mood even after you stop listening to it.  It shifts how neurons talk to one another. Your brain is a very powerful tool and controls every function of the body and how we think, feel, and act. All things in the physical world are vibrations and brain vibrations are the best ones to change. So when you alter the vibrations of the brain you are changing every aspect of your life.

A psychology professor at Ohio State University, Charles Emery conducted a study to determine the effects of music and exercise on the brains of cardiac rehabilitation patients. Emery said that exercise causes positive changes in the nervous system, and these changes may have a direct effect on cognitive ability. “Listening to music may influence cognitive function through different pathways in the brain. The combination of music and exercise may stimulate and increase cognitive arousal while helping to organize cognitive output,” said Emery. With that said music is an important catalyst for increased brainpower and positive personal change when used with exercise.

In the Thrive book Brendan discussed how listening to loud music will stimulate the body. He discussed how by listening to heavy music before a big event can be beneficial in your performance. Since the body views the music as a” threat” your body starts to pump your adrenal glands which gives you energy. Though listening to such heavy music can benefit the athlete for only short term. Because as mentioned before if done too early will cause the body to use all that adrenaline feeling (energy) before you actually need it. Therefore by the time of your event you are drained. And who wants that?

Twin’s Question:

What is your favorite type of music to listen to when working out? Do you notice a difference in your performance based on the type of music your listening to?

I do! I love to listen to music with a good beat, not always necessarily a fast beat. I listen to a wide range of music, it all depends on the type of exercise I am doing. But for long intense workouts I prefer techno, rap, hip-hop, and dance type of songs. They really help get me going!

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Till next time,

Michelle

Techno. Hard core, heavy, fast paced beated techno.

I can’t work out without music. Too many distractions at the gym.

So cool that you just made a treat w/ chia seeds. You’ve already popped by my bloggie today, but I also whipped up a little chia goodness. Problem is that unless you have the white seeds, everything looks a bit on the black side which is visually not great, but the taste is right :)

And your brownie balls….if you go under tags on my blog, I call my brownies Raw Vegan Freezer Brownies. I am also throwing up a link on tomorrow’s post too. But yeah, so good.

However, you have way more patience than I…the rollling into balls doesnt happen, I just flatten into a pan in effort to save time.

Enjoy your Sunday!

I will take a look at your brownie recipe, thanks girl! Yes white chia seeds are not readily available as black chia seeds, ugh, hopefully that will change.
