Recap of our 1st long run for marathon training
Hey everyone
Hope you all had a wonderful Tuesday. As I am sitting here writing this I cannot believe it is going on 10pm!!! I have not done much work today…yikes…but I did get a few things done today that were important.
We started our day with a delicious raspberry smoothie

Marathon Training Day 1
Lori and I ran about 11 miles today. Our goal was 12 but my stomach was not happy with me. I guess it was not the best thing to do after getting a colonic. But besides finishing a little short of our goal we were both really proud especially since it has been about 3 weeks since we ran!
We were excited to finally run again (due to our cleanse we took it easy) but we were also excited because we finally got to try Vega Sport…we received this package the other day

Thank you VEGA for the samples!!!
Ever since reading Brendan Brazier’s Thrive we have wanted to try this product. We already love Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer…which I know for some people they cannot stand the taste or texture, but when I first had it I loved it…my body loves it. I not only love the product because of its taste but I believe in all the ingredients that are in it, plus love the company’s concept…getting more people to enjoy plant based foods : )

K enough of that…so what did we think? Keep reading….
Pre-workout drink

Taste test: I found the taste to be alright. Taste like any other sports drink, which is good because most people should be used to the taste. Lori was not a big fan of overall taste, although due her liking the ingredients she drank it. We waited about 1 hour before we went for our run. We wanted to make sure our stomachs liked it before we left the house
Now this was our first time taking this product and it is hard to judge if the product helped our performance. Therefore we plan to try this at least 2 more times before we give an overall rating. Lori and I feel that you need to do or try something at least 3 times before making any decisions.
Ok, now back to our run!
We went up to the local park to run because it was so nice out. A perfect day for running…cool and sunny. We did layer up though because it was cold in the shady spots, which there were a lot of on our trail.

We took a new trail…well actually it is has been a year since we ran here so I guess all the trails are new : )
We did manage not to get lost and found our way back to the car!!
We both felt great the first hour of running. The trail we picked had a nice mix of hills and flat. Although majority of the hills were at the end of the run. And some were very steep. We kept saying that this must be what it feels like when Lance Armstrong climbs the Pyrenees in the Tour de France. Ok, well Lance probably would have laughed at us!

This was one of the worst ones

Though when you climb you also have to come down
We also made a little friend along our run today

Very odd to see a turtle out on the running trail????
Lori scared him as she got closer to him…. way to go sis.

Continuing on about our run
Lori broke down a little in the middle but finished strong, as I started struggling towards the end of the run…the last 3 miles to be exact. Each mile I felt like my legs were getting heavier and heavier…I was not happy! Then the last mile my stomach just started acting up and I could no longer run, so we had to walk the last mile back to the car : (
But all said and done…. we finished! We did this all with NO IPOD…. wow I know! We actually forgot to grab them on the way out. So the run was really a quiet time (lots of huffing and puffing action going on) and time to focus on our running form. And listening to nature of course…. haha.
Got back to the car and went home to whip up and simple post workout shake.

Coconut water, dates, bee pollen, royal jelly (made with honey), lime, maca and dulse flakes
A perfect combination of nutrition to re-fuel and nourish our bodies!
We wanted to share with you all about MACA. I know many of you have heard it the word before and maybe some of you are still not sure what it is. Well, our friend Stephanie asked us about it. So here we go.
Maca 101:
- is a cruciferous, hearty root vegetable native to the Andean highlands in Peru
- belong to the same botanical family as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, radish and turnip
- grows high in the mountains
- one of the only plants that exists that grows in such high altitudes and survives in such extreme weather conditions
- Native Peruvians have used Maca as food and medicine since before the Incas- has high nutritional and medicinal value
- is an adaptogen which brings the body to the heightened state of resistance to disease through physiological and emotional health
- Contains trace minerals: potassium (helps to regulate ph), calcium, phosphorous, sulfur, magnesium, iron, sodium, silica, iodine, zinc, manganese, aluminum, tin and copper
- aids the body in maintaining homeostasis in adapting to stress (ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WE TAKE MACA)
- easily digestible and its nutrients are highly assimilated
- contains essential amino acids and high fiber content
Here are some more reasons why we incorporate Maca into our lifestyle: increases energy, stamina, and mental clarity, supports the thyroid, supports normal sexual function, promotes hormone balance (ANOTHER MAIN REASON WHY WE TAKE IT -since we are not taking the pill anymore)
Again- Maca is known as a superfood, which I hope you all can see why. Lori and I have noticed some improvements by taking Maca though where our bodies are now in the healing stages we are still not recognizing nutrients to the full potential yet. (We will get there) Plan to discuss nutrient absorption in another post.
Though we believe in maca and know that it is truly helping our bodies heal. Now, you may be thinking…. is it worth the money? Yes and no. We think some people benefit from incorporating ’superfoods’ into their diet though some people do not notice a difference. Both ways are fine. We feel you have to listen to your body and it might be different than from what some one else does. Now, if you have the time and money to try maca than go for it. And see what happens.
Another big thing that we got done today was another route to get some fresh NATURAL SPRING WATER! This time we had 2 huge 5 gallon jugs plus our few small bottles.
But before we headed out the door we made some “To-Go” green smoothies with our glass straws. Love those things!
Isn’t our to-go cup perfect

Filled with mango, banana, mizuna, coconut oil, lime juice and zest, and water
Here is what we came home with

LOVE OUR NATURAL SPRING WATER!
Hopefully that water last us awhile! It is a half day trip to get out there….. but totally worth it.
When we got back we just made another simple shake and snacked on the last bit of kale chips
I guess we need to make some more.
We wanted to end the evening with sharing with you some of our favorite running things so far and purchases we plan to make soon
Socks we love – Asics – Kayano II Low cut

Nike Frees – they have newer models out… I guess we need to upgrade

HAHA yes you may have noticed in this picture what we have the same shoes, same socks, and same pants on…. opps…. rest assured we had on different shirts and sweaters!!!
Still Need to purchase:
Garmin running watch – I have seen so many runners with these and now I can see why. Because during our run today we kept saying we wish we knew the exact mileage we just run. We typically go my map quest. :/
And some new work out attire from Lululemon – seen this brand floatin around on some of our favorite blogs.
Probably a few more things as we get rolling back into the training.
Twins Question: What is your favorite workout necessity? Is it a watch, shoe, sock, song? Or have you bought something recent that you just absolutely love and want to share?
Till next time, from our running shoes to yours
Lori and Michelle

Wow. A marathon. I’ve always wanted to do that. Unfortunately, I still have issues from an old knee injury, and my foot isn’t quite right after breaking it last year. I wish you both luck.
How did you score those Vega samples? I want to try it, too.

Thanks Elizabeth. Yes we are excited to try LuLuLemon, and yes unfortunately the good things are always at a higher price, but maybe over time that will change. We have heard of the book Born to Run, we might just have to get it! Thanks girl : )

thanks for the maca facts ladies, i had no idea this stuff even existed? question – do you notice any changes in your adaptation to stress when you are eating(??) maca? type A over here has some anxiety/stress issues every once in a while and i am always looking for ways to naturally ease that… just curious what your experience has been. you guys are awesome btw, appreciate all the info!

Great post! And congrats on the 11 mile run! That’s great for not running in 3 weeks! And it’s always great to be able to read workouts and foods eaten by RAW athletes!
I just ran my first marathon on Oct. 11th and ate mostly raw for the whole training. It was difficult at first but I did throw in some cooked veggies, sweet potatoes, LOTS of quinoa, and the occasional fish (and chicken).
But I’ll be keep up with your runs. I was actually looking into running the Walt Disney World Marathon in Jan! Looks like fun! And I am going to have to try some of the Vega products! I have Brendan’s book Thrive and I think it is one of the best books out there for optimal nutrition while training for any sport!

Oh, and my Garmin watch is the BEST THING EVER! Especially for running a marathon! It tells your pace, distance, time, calories burned, monitors your heart rate, you name it, it does it! Highly recommended. Amazon has them cheaper than the company website.
