16 mile run plus another delicious raw dessert

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 08:12 PM

Good evening friends,

How was everyone’s day? Well mine didn’t start well. And now the evening was going well but starting having issues with the blog! Grrrrrr

I woke up this morning with my tummy not feeling the best. I had a colonic done yesterday (Lori did not – she is going every other week now) and I had a really good session :) Sorry I get happy about these kinds of things!

Anyways since today was our long run day I was worried that I was not going to be able to run due to tummy being upset. The nice salad that I enjoyed last night was probably not the best thing for me to have because I have a slow digestive fire and salads can be hard on the stomach.  So I am going to try to take a break from salads : (

Lori and I started our morning with our usually warm lemon water followed by a green smoothie. I was hoping this would calm down my stomach but only seemed to make it worse, so I started thinking I was not going to be able to run. Yet Lori reminded me that today was the only day we have time for long runs…so I got dressed.

Our pre-workout snack was some of cranberry chia pudding from last night.  We saved some so we could try having it before a run, we wanted to see how our stomachs did. Although it was hard for me to tell due to my stomach already going crazy.

We drizzled more agave and added cacao nibs for energy! Plus had one of these too!

Carob Macaroon…yummy!

Okay now ready to go run.

Due to the cold rainy weather we had to do our long run on the treadmill at the gym : / Now I have not been to the gym since I was in OKC at 105 degrees, so I felt a bit weird. Ever since I have been back from school Lori and I have been running outside and then doing yoga and things at home. I have been contemplating canceling our gym memberships, but today I was thankful I have not.

We brought 2 brownie bites for each of us to have during our run.

Twins Workout: 16 grueling miles

This was not a good run for me. I was having pains in my stomach that I have never felt in a very long time. Now do not get me wrong, I am happy to be getting things moving and out of me. It is just hard to get cleaned out while I am training for a marathon.  But that is life…things happen at the worse times.

Now the old me would have just called it quits, but I have been trying to stay more positive about life. Ever since I began my path to healing with raw foods, I have noticed it is easy for me to be positive. Oh just love the mind body connection!

We started our run slow to warm up.

Ran for 3 minutes at 6.2 then walked for 1 minute 4.0

Ran for 3 minutes at 6.3 then walked for 1 minute 4.0

Ran for 3 minutes at 6.4 then walked for 1 minute 4.0

Then to complete our first hour of running we ran 3 minutes at 6.5 and walked for 1 minute at 4.0.

Entering our second hour, we started running at 6.6 for 3 minutes and walked for 1 minute. Around mile 9 we had our first brownie bite. We walked for two minutes while we ate and drank some water.

Then we began to run again….and oh boy did I get the worse pain in my stomach. I do not think it was from the brownie bite! It was due to my previous upset stomach and running…running always gives my tummy problems, especially long runs.

When we got to mile 11, I was about to jump off slowly step off the treadmill…I was done.

But instead I walked for half a mile and kept reminding myself I can do this, just breathe through the pain.

I turned my music up louder (does loud music help motivate anyone else?) and focused. I began to get back into my run pattern of 3 minutes at 6.6 and 1 minute walk. I did this till the second hour was done.

We both kept pushing each other to finish. As my stomach was killing me, Lori’s feet started aching. So we both were not sure how we were going to finish. We had our second brownie bite at mile 14 as a boost to run 2 more.

I am not sure how I managed to keep running, but I did. Lori and I made it 16 miles in 2 hours 45 minutes, which is not too bad considering how I was feeling. I will admit I was really mad at myself during my run, well more disappointed in me. I almost started to cry because I could not run. But I talked my way out and pushed on. This was a really big deal for me because as I mentioned earlier normally I would give up because the pain was too much, but today I mentally worked through it. I say mentally because for me that is were all my pain comes from, so I had to start there if I wanted to finish!

Both of us were looking forward to our post-workout shake….yet we had no idea what it was going to be. We looked around the kitchen and saw this

We have not tried Vega’s Smoothie Infusions, so we thought what the heck.

We blended it up with maca, agave, chlorella, and topped it with bee pollen.

I must say this didn’t really hit the spot for me after a hard run. I did not really like the taste, although I think it was the taste of the chlorella. I still prefer the Vega Whole food health optimizer powder the best.  Although the smoothie probably would have been better with some fruit since it already has greens in it!

And yes my stomach was still giving me trouble…ugh.

About an hour later we had large green smoothie. We drank most of it and saved the rest, which we became our dinner plus we munch on some raw crackers that we made last week for us.

Then we finally got to create our next dessert!!

This one was inspired by this wonderful lady, in honor of Operation Chocolate Covered Kindness, which I have seen different versions of the lovely fudge babies all over the blog world  : )

And here is the Twins version….

Chocolate covered chocolate chip cookie bites

The Twins
