Trying to be perfect

by Lori and Michelle on December 14, 2009

Good evening friends,

Another busy day here with the twins.

Did manage to get a lot done today which is always a great way to start the week!! Did laundry, tons of emails, tons of baking, organizing, and even manage to get a few Christmas gifts out of the way.

How have the twins been doing on our cleanse?

Good. Taking each day at a time and trying to not stress over anything. Easier said than done.

Enjoyed yet another green smoothie.. .this time out of a glass straw!! Fancy eh?

We don’t want to bore everyone with posting all of our food/liquid intake over this cleanse because it is all going to look pretty much the same. Unless you all what to see it? Of course, if we eat something unique or ‘food blog’ worthy we will share it.

Like who wants to see us drink more green smoothies…. ok maybe us!

But we did want to share one thing that we have been learning while on this cleanse. One thing that we figured out today is that majority of our problems comes from our mind. All Mental?!?

You might thinking what am I talking about.

Well, we all know how stress is very important in our overall health. Lori and I tend to over do some things sometimes all the time. What do I mean? Maybe because there is two of us but we seem to over analyze everything from food to work to exercise. I think our main issue is trying to be PERFECT!

Does that ever happen to you?

That you try and try and try and you don’t seem to be getting any happier. Or that you try one thing but are not seeing the results you want therefore you try something else. And before you know it you have tried over 1,000 different things and still might be in the same spot where you started.

Or are you?

Maybe even through all the research, trying different products, doing things differently you actually learn things. Hopefully you learn what doesn’t work. And maybe that is all you need to find what really works. Or maybe it just makes you more confused and frustrated that you don’t want to do it anymore.

Well that is where we feel we at in our journey. Nowadays we are going to really try hard to JUST BE! Be and live in the moment and let life take its course!! And hopefully we heal along the way… well we hope that is what everyone wants out of life!

For us raw food is what is going to help  heal us and now we just have to be patient. And truly enjoy our journey! We hope that our story and struggles are able to help someone, even if that is just one person. Because we wish we had someone to follow during our beginning stages! By going more into a raw foods lifestyle we both have learned so much about food in general and our own health. And that is one gift that we are so thankful for!!

* And for our new readers this blog is about our journey of healing our stomach, depression, constipation, acne, and dealing with stress. We love food so we will share recipes, tips, and anything else that we can think of. We hope you all stick around to watch our journey and hopefully learn something along the way!!!

Till next time,

The Twins

… enjoy the process and be open to learn as you go. It’s not “getting there” it’s being… you both seem so open to try & learn & grow, it’s all good. Why do we stress? It’s our culture. But recognizing it and moving beyond. Ahhh.. the rewards!

I too am working on fighting perfectionism and being more patient – we can do this!

Thanks for this post!
Sometimes we are so afraid to ‘just be.’ So we look and look and look outside ourselves for all kinds of things when most of the time what we need is right there within us.
Sharing your journey and your truths really do help others.
Raw food and cleansing can help get you closer to who you really are but so much of it is mental too. There has to be a cleansing of the body, the mind and the soul. I don’t really know how to do that but step one is, like you said, Just Be.
Much love and holiday blessings to you guys!

I am going to try to follow your advice of living in the moment, eating a plant based diet (which I’ve been trying to do for a while now) and hopefully heal (even just a little bit) along the way. If nothing else, I know that I have a healing place, it just happens to be 20 below sea level on an island 2500 miles away!
Keep writing!

Often times I find that people who are into holistic, alternative, raw, vegan, non-mainstream choices…we can possibly go too far overboard trying to find the cleanest, most eco friendly, most friendly for our body, highest raw, most organic vegan, etc etc choice….and although we do this in the name of “good” if we let ourselves obsess on it, we actually cause stress.

When I first had my daughter…everything from cosleeping to cloth diapering to vaccinating to nursing to what kind of toys (wood, not plastic, etc) she would be allowed to have, it was dizzying and I was driving myself nuts! So I have learned to try to mellow on things…parenthood, food choices, you name it, just roll with it more.

Easier said than done, I know, bc you’re right, it’s so much a mental game :)

Great post!

I can totally relate to trying to be “perfect!” It’s exhausting! (and almost impossible to do!!)

I’m so impressed that you ladies are doing this cleanse around the holidays! I find it SO hard to be on any sort of schedule around this time of the year, let alone be on a cleanse! You ladies are truly inspirational! I’m excited to hear how it works out for you. Patience and persistence are definitely the hardest part!!

Where did you get your glass straws? I was just looking to buy some today!

Hey Ladies :) I commented a few days ago about how I am going through the same thing with my skin. I too went off birth control about months ago!! I really think I need to do the candida cleanse- Do you have any advice? Or is there a way I can email you with a few questions… I am really bumming about my skin and reading your blog has given me some hope, finally!!

Hi beautiful gals – We were totally on the same page today in talking about stress and I hope that the quote at the end of my post today resonated with you. That being said, this really is a journey. One smoothie at a time.

You are lucky that you have one another to support each other in your lifestyle and career choices. Not everyone in the world can say that. Rather than focus on the stress of it or the baby details — enjoy it!! You are making great choices to work to heal yourselves and helping others learn from your mistakes along the way.

When you find yourself stressing or being very hard on yourselves, ask yourself if you would every say that to another person. How would someone else react if you said that to them? Also think about how much easier and less stressful things could be without the added pressure and stress.

I think you’re both wonderful, especially since I made your chocolate cream cake tonight to share with my best friend tomorrow evening. It looks (and tastes) delicious and I really enjoyed making it.

Love to both of you xo

Stephanie December 14, 2009 at 8:31 pm

This is a great post girls, I can totally relate to so much that you are talking about here and it’s so nice to know that there are friends like you out there going through similar issues – kind of comforting to feel that same bond with a friend I think? I am convinced that the goal of perfection in all we do is an inherent trait in certain individuals (personality type, etc) however completely agree that much of this can be mentally overcome. While striving for perfection in certain aspects of life can be healthy, when it takes over all parts of life it can really wear on a person. You girls are fabulous, and I know that in time you will find the right balance for you :) Thanks for being so wonderful – always!

Stephanie, thanks girl for your support :) It is so nice knowing that there are others out there experiencing similar issues! XOXO Finding balance is key!!!!

Kasie@~The Art of Life December 14, 2009 at 8:48 pm

I understand exactly what you all are saying. It’s very hard to allow yourself to “just be.” I’m a terrible perfectionist myself. I know that you are on the right path. I like to think of every day as another step on the journey.

This is a great, and very self-knowing post. I’d say that 90% of my new-to-raw clients suffer from the same fundamental problem: WAAAAAAAAAY too much reading, too much research, too much internet time, and too much getting worked up about stupid, unimportant minutiae of eating raw. Certainly, there are plenty of websites that promote this issue!

There are lots of approaches to raw, and lots of people in the community would lambast me for being as non-specific as I am. But I’ve learned that intuition and common sense matter a whole lot more than some of the exhaustive research and overwhelming info out there.

Just keep listening to your bodies, and not stressing. Eat well, relax, and don’t think about food too hard. My friend Gil would tell you that negative emotions and stress are acidic, so stay away!

:-)

Yes, stress less is the goal of the new year and just enjoy life! Thanks Gena!!

Lori December 15, 2009 at 10:35 am

Great post and I agree with everyone’s comments. Finding balance is hard. Finding perfection is hard. Maybe that is because both are subjective… maybe they don’t really exist. I struggle, as a lot of people do, with trying to be something I am not, trying to be better than I am… until I read something like this post and ask myself, “WHY?!” Why do I need to be something I am not already?? Instead of trying to change myself, why not just work with what I already have/am? It is hard to accept… and it is fun to try to be better. Ending this rant, I’ll just say thank you for writing the post! Makes you think a little…
