Do you compost?

by Lori and Michelle on March 2, 2010

Hey friends,

We were blown away by how many people requested our recipe for our chocolate chip cookie pie.  We have to thank Jessica again for inspiring us to create it, man she has much more amazing goodies we have been dreaming about to make ; )  We are thinking about sharing it. As you all know we are a business, so some things are special to us (and took a lot of time and work), but we are working on a cookbook!!!

But as I mentioned we are considering sharing it…we will see ; )

Today’s video is our first attempt at making our first compost! Our friend Mike, who by the way has 4 great blogs that cover all great topics and tips, so go check them out. Mike did a post recently how to make compost, so we thought why not give it a try.

Lori and I are always looking for ways to be more “green”. Mike is always sharing great tips for helping out the planet. What do you do that is green?

Here are just a few things the Twins do:

  • enjoy a raw food vegan lifestyle
  • bring our own bags to the grocery store
  • shop locally
  • use glass over plastic, when possible
  • turn off lights when not in use
  • unplug electronics, etc
  • energy efficient light bulbs
  • use towels over paper towels
  • keep thermostat at lower during winter and high during summer (off most of the time)
  • have bamboo and cork flooring in our house
  • reuse, reduce, and recycle everything we can

Now we made our first compost:

  • - large bin
  • - organic soil
  • - coffee grounds
  • - juice pulp/food scraps
  • - shredded paper

Yay we have no idea what we are doing, but it was fun. The best way to learn something is to just do and learn as you go. We challenge all of you to make your own compost if you do not already do so. Let us know if you do!!!

We will see how this goes :)

Following the gardening trend Mike again inspires us with his homegrown vegetable garden out of pots…in NY…off his balcony. He is truly an amazing person!

So look what we did

IMG_4757

Bought an aloe leaf plant from a local farmer! Instead of buying the leave from Whole Foods (which is the one on the right). We are going to try to grow our own plant. The farmers said they are easy to grow.

And

Bought cabbage from the farmer as well to start growing our own cabbage. Since we go through it so much from making our sauerkraut! :) We see how to do with our garden and compost! Only time will tell.

Do any of you grow your own food, or have you thought about growing your own food?

Till next time… got exciting news we will share later!

Michelle

thanks for helping the earth! over 50% of landfill is food waste.

I’m so jealous you have a yard!! I would love to grow some of my own veggies, but I don’t have ANY grass of my own! :( That’s a BIG con of living in LA… one of many. *sigh*

Your chocolate chip cookie pie looks amazing! Hope you guys end up sharing!! ;)

We compost and we garden! Helps that I’m married to Mr. Yardsnacker (yardsnacker.com). ;) We’re gearing up for the new season. Yay!

Thanks for letting us know about yardsnacker.com…we will check it out. Must be nice to have a man that loves to be in the yard ; )

That’s too funny. I asked the exact same question on my blog today! My compost is outside in an open bin, and I can now get to it, after it was buried in snow. I had to take a break for a couple months, but I’m back to it now!

Katie, great minds think alike ; ) Glad you are able to get to your compost now!

So funny that you posted about growing your own garden and composting!!! That’s what I wrote about today on my blog! Weird. haha!
Well, I didn’t write about composting but I wrote about juicing and the pulp that is wasted… and I know I should be composting it… maybe I will start today!
But on the garden, we’ve had one for the last 2 years but in the winter it’s dead. Starting one up again next weekend!

Yup, I compost. In fact, I was just working on an article today about composting that I’ll be running on my site this spring.

Your enclosed plastic tote is going to get mighty stinky. Be sure to remember to turn it over. You might want to consider an outdoor compost bin/area.

Last summer was my first square-foot garden. Nothing better than shopping in your own backyard, I’ll tell ya! Dreaming of this year’s garden is about the only thing that’s gotten me through this very looooooong winter.

my parents are avid composters, but living in the middle of the city, with no where to the put the compost i have let that one thing slide. unfortunately my freezer is to full of food to store it there! someday, when i have my own path of grass I’ll start back up again!

Love it girls. Glad that you got started. You can leave the container and shake it up like 2-3x week to aerate it to Earth Mother’s point. It’ll stink, but it’s enclosed. Can’t wait to see the results in a present kind of way.
