Unexpected findings at Whole Foods

by Lori and Michelle on March 22, 2010

Hey friends

Well we made it home yesterday from Fitbloggin. Overall the conference went fine. It was a huge learning curve for us both. Everyone we met there was so nice and gave great feedback for us to use to make our company and products better! The only thing that we would say that was a con about the Fitbloggin conference was that there were not much presentations on fitness/health/exercise. Majority of the speakers were talking about making your blog great! Now do not get us wrong we learned some new things from these speakers about making our blog better. We just wished there was one or two segments on fitness tips, etc. But besides that we thought Fitbloggin was a success :)   And a HUGE thanks to Roni for letting us and our raw gluten free vegan company be apart of this great event!!! Roni and the rest of the staff did an amazing job with keeping everything very organized!

Fun times!!!!

Before we left Baltimore we stopped by Whole Foods one more time and came across raw heaven! (not sure how we missed this stuff the first time we went in there)

march fitbloggin 037A whole fridge section of RAW foods to go!!! Of course we got some to try out!

Then as we continued to walk around we came across more raw foods! We will serious in heaven the whole time and huge smiles on our faces.

march fitbloggin 040We were like two kids in the candy store!

march fitbloggin 038

And finally Brad’s Raw Chips (we have always wanted to try these). We got the basic kale flavored though the beet chips sounded great. Overall we liked the light and chip like texture these raw chips provided as well as that there were no nuts in them. The one and only con was for some reason we kept getting a weird after taste. Not sure why.

Here is what we bought

march fitbloggin 044

Some things we liked and some things we were not really impressed with due to aftertaste, flavor and ingredients. Though we were thrilled to see raw foods options in the store on this coast! The best thing was the orange blueberry cheesecake but of course not as good as ours.

march fitbloggin 145

march fitbloggin 041 We also tried the Love Force Cinnamon Raisin bread and did not like it. The bread stuck together and was way too sweet for our liking. It tasted more like a granola bar to us than a slice of bread. And Michelle found it to be too chewy for her liking.

march fitbloggin 002We also got a wrap and mock tuna salad. We did not eat these until we got home. Our thoughts on these raw foods- not bad. It was nice having the option of raw foods in the store though none of them really blew us away.

march fitbloggin 209Wrap

march fitbloggin 205

Mock tuna salad

As a whole meal these two items tasted fine though when we tried the wrap or filling separately it was gross. Maybe that was because it sat in our car for 5 hours before we ate it. But also we did not know exactly when the raw foods arrived at Whole Foods so they might not have been that fresh to begin with in the first place.

Both of us would still get these raw foods again if we had no other choice because again mentally it was so nice seeing raw foods in stores. Perfect for those with on the go schedules or people wanting a healthier alternative than highly processed foods. We love to support other raw companies because even us (being raw chefs) like to get a break.

And we also got 2 different types of brownies and mint macaroons. We were not huge fans of any of them. Brownies were boring to us  and not real rich chocolate like which is what we love about brownies. Also one of the brownies tasted like a power bar, not a good thing. Since it made us think we were eating a power bar we felt like it was just going to sit in our stomachs like bars do and get us clogged up. Not good! We only had a few bites of each.

march fitbloggin 156

We only liked the raw cacao nibs on top of this brownie. It was the better one of the two brownies we got. This brownie did contain nuts.

march fitbloggin 159

march fitbloggin 167

This is the one that tasted like a power bar!At least to us the brownie did.

march fitbloggin 170Next up was macaroons…. not to be biased or anything but these were nothing like ours! ;)

march fitbloggin 188

And the mint macaroons were not our favorite either. One reason we did not like them was it had spearmint in it and we hate spearmint! And two the agave was too strong (that could be do to the fact that we really are becoming less and less fans of agave). It is our least favorite sweetener because it is too sweet for us now.

Well that is pretty much our eats from yesterday we mostly just snacked. By the time we got home we made ourselves a huge bowl of sauerkraut! Heaven!

We did a little bit of work and emails than hit the sack pretty early. By working at the conference as well as trying to network was very exhausting. Thanks again to everyone who came up to our table and spoke with us. It was a pleasure meeting you all!

photoThat is us with our sister, Jen, who was there promoting her new t-shirt company. Thanks sis for all your help and support !

Today we have been running around like crazy (what else is new) trying to fulfill orders and get ready for the farmers market this weekend. As well as we are going to be making some changes to our blog. From the great tips and information from the Fitbloggin conference we are going to try to make our blog better! Therefore you might start noticing some changes this week.

Till next time… we have some great guest post lined up.

PS: we forgot to mentioned yesterday about the Lebanese Taverna restaurant we went to does offer a gluten free menu. For those of you interested in gluten free restaurants in the Baltimore area.

Fun! Lots of raw finds there. Thanks for all the reviews. I’ll be on the lookout for some of these treats. :)

I wish my Whole Food had all those goodies! I love Awesome foods, I’ve had their wraps, yum!! I also have to say those macaroons were NOT as good as yours! ;) I had them recently, I am a HUGE raw macaroon fan and they were good, but like I said, yours are better!

SO glad you two had a great time at FitBloggin! And that’s great that you got to give out samples of your (AMAZING) raw treats. Those attendees are LUCKY people! (I just got my package of the raw flatbreads and green cookies and mint macs… OMG they’re all SO SO SO good!)

And I’m just like you two when it comes to discovering or finding raw foods inside stores… I go a little crazy and spend way too much money. I love trying all the new raw foods/companies, but they never taste quite as good as homemade. Oh well, gotta encourage the raw movement!

Happy Monday to you both!

FitBloggin looks like a fun event! Glad you ladies had a good time. :)

I’ve explored the raw food section at multiple Whole Foods in my area, and I find that I typically prefer the treats I make at home, too. I once tried a raw chocolate cookie that had raw olives in it!! I HATE olives, and I guess I missed that ingredient when I checked over the label… I certainly wasn’t expecting THAT combo! With all of your talent and practice, I’m sure you ladies make better stuff than you can buy at the store!! But I, too, am happy that those options are out there in a pinch. ;)

too bad your food wasn’t better :( But I need to express my even greater gratitude and love for your blog now! I am so sick of always reading glowing reviews about everything, all the time. Don’t get me wrong I love love love hearing and learning about great new products and am glad when bloggers take the time to share BUT everything they try can’t be good! I don’t know if its the free samples thing, or that they only like to share positive information and not negative reviews but I think negative are just as if not more important to hear about than positive. I don’t want to waste my money and if other people disagree you can usually find out in the comments. so anyways, thanks for the honesty!

Thank you Kelly! We always try to give honest reviews, and most reviews are due to us trying and buying a product ourselves. We do find some bloggers to give good reviews because it was free, which is why we mostly buy ours before giving a review.

Glad you had such a good time at FitBloggin! And I love that WF haul :) I agree that prepackaged meals, even raw/vegan ones, are never as good as making them on your own, but in a pinch sometimes it’s necessary. I’m glad stores like WF are making those options more available!

Loved the honest reviews of the raw products. What I loved even more, was you coming right out and saying, “Ours is better!” Absolutely!

I tend to not even gravitate towards the packaged raw products. I get that they’re “convenience” foods, but what you gain in quick/easy, you certainly lack in taste/frehsness.

That would be “freshness.”

Okay, a little dyslexic today, Earth Mother? :D

I agree – just the fact that a grocery store even has a raw food section is such a novelty – I’m appreciative enough at this point that I’m willing to overlook some quality flaws!

I love the honest reviews and i often think to myself at WFs why would i pay $5 bucks for a tiny little treat or novelty item that’s not that good, that i can make BETTER and far cheaper at home if i put a little effort in, and that i can control the ingredients. I know that people who buy this stuff must be very rich or easily impressed b/c most of it, i really dont find that good. It’s refreshing to read that neither do you girls :)

I don’t like how much Wholefoods varies, but luckily the one by me is pretty awesome, haha. They have a huge raw foods section, and I love those mint macaroons! I had that wrap this weekend though, and I was not a fan. I don’t buy a lot of raw stuff those for the same reason you all probably don’t…its expensive and I can make most of it myself!

EEEEK! I’m so jealous of you for getting to go to Wholefoods! I love that place! I’ve only been once, back when I was in uni in the states, and it was overwhelmingly awesome. SO much to choose from! And I didn’t even know about all the raw stuff. Looks like you had a great time!

Natasha we love whole foods, and we are lucky we have 4 where we live, although not all wholefoods carry the same products.

Gena March 23, 2010 at 6:13 am

Am embarrassment of riches!!

I have to admit, I like the Love Force raisin bread! Though I do consider it more of a sweet than a savory, to be sure.

Reply

Pure2 March 23, 2010 at 7:14 am

Oh Gina we liked the bread, just the texture was a little chewy, like a granola bar, not bread like. And for the sweetness, I think I am just not used to sweet things due to avoiding sugar, so I think that is more me than anything.

Lauren @ Eater not a runner March 23, 2010 at 11:43 am

Thank you for the honest reviews! Since whole foods is so expensive, it’s nice to get a little idea of what you are getting before you buy it ;-)

I love the raw section at Whole Foods and try to grab something new from it each trip. Not cheap, but a fun once-a-week splurge.

It is neat to see you reviewing all of this raw food stuff. BECAUSE I was JUST at Whole Foods today, hemming and hawing over what raw snack I would buy myself. Already tried the cacao brownie and I agree w. you… the nibs are the best part. Instead I got Emmy’s dark chocolate macs. I LOVED THEM! Man – if yours are better than hers – WOW. I can’t wait to try your stuff. :)

I agree w. Christine above… WF is sooo expensive. Once a week (Tuesdays) is all I allow myself. The rest of the days, I make my own snacks. Orrrr snacks that are from recipes that are stolen from my blogger friends!!!!

Glad to hear you had fun at fitbloggin’!

I’ve been so busy with my bloggin’ lately, that I keep getting to yours too late. I wish I had known you were going to be that close. I would’ve scheduled a trip to Baltimore to meet you two in person :-)

Please Help!! How can I contact Brad’s Raw Chips??? I placed an order with them on March 4, 2010 and have recieved nothing. I have repeatedly asked for a refund via e-mail but get no response. I am so frustrated with these people. Can you help??

Pure2 April 18, 2010 at 7:41 am

Margaret, I am not sure how to contact Brad’s raw chips? That was our first time getting their products. I have never ordered from them before so I am not sure how their system works. I am sorry that I can not give better advice. I would just keep emailing and calling the company till you get a response. Sorry.
