Workouts on hold

by Lori and Michelle on June 24, 2010

Hey everyone

I apologize but this is going to be a quick post.

Remember yesterday when Lori mentioned she has not been feeling well. I do not mean to be graphic or anything, but she has been getting sick these past few mornings. We are not sure why.

We think it might be from the intense workouts because yesterday we took the day off and she did not get sick. But today we did our Insanity workout and she got sick just like earlier in the week. Same symptoms. Same results.

Has anyone ever experienced getting sick after workouts?? I did a quick search on the internet and there seems to be others that get nausea and all, and one person said probiotics helped. Which Lori and I have not mentioned much about our diet lately, but we have cut way back on our fermented foods and drinks. One being we are going out of town, but another is related to yeast. We both seem to be having symptoms again.

We have our typical post workout shake.

june 2010 p2r blog 708

One that is full of sugar (blueberries), green (spirulina) and protein (some type of protein power, Vega or hemp)

We have not been eating anything out of the ordinary. So we are not sure if it is food related.

But something is going on and both of us are not sure what.

So we are going to be taking a little break from our Insanity workouts. We hate to put our 60 day challenge on hold, but sometimes your body is giving you signals and you just have to listen.  The hardest part is stopping and resting.

Although I have been feeling fine, which is weird because as you all know Lori and I pretty much eat the same things, do the same things, etc. But this is a perfect example that we are TWO DIFFERENT people.

Anyways if anyone has any ideas on what causes getting sick after working out, we would love to hear them!!

Thanks!

Till next time,

Michelle

I hope you ladies feel better! I use to have a similar problem but when I ate something, I would feel better shortly. I also use to shake a lot after a hard workout. For some reason that went away as well! XO

I do get sick to my stomach when I run in the heat and get overheated, so possibly from the Insanity work outs you are getting too hot

Thanks Devyn, I agree the heat and over working has to do something with it. We shall see when we take a little break :)

I have actually spent most of my life getting nausea and headaches from working out, and that’s on a good day – on a bad day I would usually throw up from working out. Yoga was usually my best bet in terms of not getting too sick, but even a particularly intense yoga class could cause me to become very nauseated. It is only in the last year when, with the help of a naturopath, I was diagnosed with adrenal deficiency and put on various supplements, that I actually started being able to work out and not get somewhat, if not very, ill.

That is obviously my specific story, but the naturopath said that intense workouts can cause nausea and stomach problems even when it’s not adrenal fatigue – the key is figuring out if the person is properly hydrated, has other health issues, etc. In my case, it was a combination on depleted adrenals and a sluggish thyroid, because with both of us addressed, workouts have become a lot more doable for me. Hope this helps. Best to both of you.

Valerie, thank you so much for your comment. You bring up some great points and we will look into it all. I think a lot has to do with dehydration but thinking of her adrenals is another good point. Thanks again!!!!

Wow, I’m really sorry to hear that Lori is still feeling awful. I hope that a bit of rest gives her body the resources it needs to heal. She might be fighting something off and by putting her body through the extra stress of the physical workout the symptoms get exacerbated. Sending you both lots of love.

Thanks Lisa!! I hope she gets through whatever may be bothering her. But I think rest and lots of water should help, we shall see :)

Oh dear, sorry to hear Lori’s sick. Get well soon xxx

Wish i could offer some advice but I’ve never done workouts that are really intense. It may sound stupid but could it be dehydration? With the hotter weather and sweating loads throughout a workout than can dehydrate you so much without realising and sickness is a classic sign. xxx

Thanks Sarah, that is a good point. Dehydration… not sure why I never thought of that before. Thanks :)

Hey Girlies,
I had that for a while. I could barely make it through my workout without feeling intense neasea and afterwards I couldn’t do anything but lay around because I was so fatigued. Eating more sugary fruits helped a lot and making sure to stay SUPER hydrated. Hope you feel better! I saw an infomerical for that workout you guys have been doing and it looks INSANE! super harder…totally kicks px90s tush…

Oh my gosh, I totally felt SICK during and after my Insanity workout yesterday, too! In fact, I was pretty much worthless for the rest of the day! It could be the intensity of the workout (I’ve found myself needing to hit pause to take a longer recovery break), or it could be dehydration, too! I checked out the nutrition guide that came with the DVD set, and it did mention that dehydration is common when doing such an intense workout!

Sounds like taking a break is a good idea! Hope Lori feels better soon!

Oh, and if you want a good probiotic supplement, I really like Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics 12 Plus. I had to stop eating fermented food, too, because I read that it can make yeast problems worse (even though I think the homemade stuff you eat is better), so I’ve been sticking to the supplements for now.

Thanks Megan, we are thinking it could be dehydration because it is now extremely hot here. But we do drink water all day, but I guess not enough. Thanks for telling us about the probiotic supplement. We have been doing more research on yeast and talked with others, and realize we need to take a step make from fermented foods, which will be hard because we love them.

Ela June 24, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Healing thoughts and wishes from me too. And I second (third, whatever :) ) the recommendations of probiotics and hydration. I always used to exercise intensely on an empty stomach and get nauseous, and everyone would always tell me that it would be better if I ate beforehand. I’m just starting to experience that that’s true.

Fascinating to read Valerie’s story, because I think I’ve shared with you before that I have a similar history: I overexercised consistently and have severe adrenal exhaustion as well as hypothyroid and can only do very little exercise at this point. A lot of my trouble is also due to years of anorexia: I don’t think you guys have that demon in your history so much? But even without it, overexercising can end up backfiring.

I’m so glad that you’re listening to your bodies – and yes, it’s amazing how differently two bodies react to the same thing – and wish you better!
love
Ela

Does Lori have a sensitivity to yeast? sometimes that does make you sick. could be a dehdyration problem and a sudden drop in blood sugar as well. Hope she feels better soon! Let us know if she finds out whats wrong.

I frequently experience headaches when working out, and it’s usually due to dehydration for me. Listening to your body is key, sometimes we push it so hard all the time, it needs a break now and then. Getting sick is your body’s way of saying ‘stop’. I hope you’re feeling better soon!

Katie June 24, 2010 at 4:34 pm

So sorry she isn’t feeling well. But I really commend you on listening to your body. I know how hard it can be to stop something when you feel so committed to it.

I would recommend water – lots of it. And, if you can get your liquid vitamins – smoothies, veg broth, etc. Water is a miracle worker, I swear!

I don’t know but I have heard from several health professionals NOT to work out if you are not feeling well. I can be hard to switch up the routine. Hope Lori feels better soon!

It’s funny you mention this, because I have experienced it a few times! Sometimes when I do two classes at the gym (usually spin class + body pump, aka an hour of cardio and an hour of strength) I feel very strange/nauseous all day. And I know I should eat but I feel like I can’t. So strange. Let me know if you find any remedy for this! Since feeling that way I have just reduced my workout time and have been fine.

Lots of times when you exercise there can be toxins that are released into the bloodstream and possibly it’s the toxins working themselves out the next day? EIther that or the heat or some food allergy issues…or she’s pregnant :)

Reply

Pure2 June 24, 2010 at 6:32 pm

haha we thought the same thing Averie, but nope not pregnant. : )

Earth Mother – In The Raw June 24, 2010 at 7:02 pm

A sudden drop in blood sugar can make you sick to your stomach. I know you mentioned what you have after the workout, but what do you eat prior? Make sure you’re not spiking your insulin levels.

I know a lot of folks mentioned dehydration, but exercise-induced nausea can also be caused by overhydration. Drinking too much water before, during, and/or after exercise can really deplete electrolyte levels in the body.

My next thought is hormones. Sure you’re not pregnant? ;)

Aww so sorry you aren’t feeling well…. I haven’t been sick sick but have been feeling very weak during workouts recently and I think it may be due to the high humidity… hope you feel better soon! :)

Oh no! Feel better soon Lori! I experienced random unknown sickness a week or so ago and Ijust had to take it easy, eat really simple foods, and hydrate hydrate hydrate. I still have no idea what the cause was – can’t decide if I ate somethng that went bad or I was dehydrated or what. Just drink up and rest up!

Dukka Girl June 25, 2010 at 10:32 am

If you’ve upped your workout intensity, maybe Lori has a calorie deficit? It sounds like low blood sugar, perhaps dropping the workout intensity a bit and fueling up? . I remember you mentioned a while back that Lori’s period hasn’t returned since going off the pill? That could also be caused by not getting enough energy to cause menstruation. Adrenal stress is another possibility.

Wow… no bueno! Feel better. I hope you can figure out what the culprit is. But taking a rest (even though it is hard) is best! Good for you for recognizing that.
