Beet smoothie, gluten free vegan pancakes and more

by Lori and Michelle on July 5, 2010

Good Morning luvs,

Michelle and I have done so much these past few days I am not sure where to begin? :)

We still have been doing our 60 day challenge of Insanity! I have been doing fine with the workouts and never got sick all week ;)

IMG_9010 Insanity sure makes me sweaty!

Michelle made us a delicious “red” green smoothie later in the morning. She saw our friend Kate make her smoothies using a beet, Michelle loves beets, so we decided to give it a try in our smoothies.

july blog 2010 148Just look at the color!

july blog 2010 147So vibrant! Now Michelle loved the beets in the smoothie, for me it took some time getting used to. But I eventually ended up liking it!

july blog 2010 086We finally got Sun Warrior Rice Protein to try :) (We bought this with our own money)

We added it into our beet smoothie! We did not like the texture or flavor the rice protein provided the smoothie. I know many of you really like Sun Warrior but I will have to give it another try to see where I stand on it. Michelle and I still really prefer Vega! I was just not blown away with Sun Warrior rice protein just yet!

We also got Sun Warrior’s Super Greens Ormus powder to try. We have really enjoyed adding this to our smoothies and shakes for additional nutritional boost!

Dinner one night was a little unusual looking kind of dish but delicious!

Millet is one of our favorites ‘grains’ to make :)

Do you like Millet? Have you ever tried millet? If so what is your favorite way to enjoy it?

Dessert was something new for me.

“Living” Tiramisu

IMG_8994This was Michelle and I’s first time ever making a raw tiramisu. We just made up the recipe as we were making it ;) Classic for us with new recipes.

IMG_9001Here I am enjoying my first slice of tiramisu. Yes that is right. I have never had ‘traditional’ tiramisu before in my life. I was never a big fan of it. It really never looked good to me. But this living version sure did ;)

IMG_9003A slice of heaven if you ask me!

Michelle and I were both pleasantly happy with our first attempt for our tiramisu. The recipe cake layer needs a little more work but after that I think we got it :)

Saturday morning we made some of our gluten free vegan pancakes for our parents. They enjoy pancakes and I wanted to share with them our recipe ;)

july blog 2010 176I guess no one like them ;)

Michelle and I were so involved in making the pancakes that we forgot to take pictures until it was too late. Sorry. We will do better next time!

july blog 2010 177Here I am enjoying my kombucha after eating some yummy gluten free vegan pancakes! Not a bad way to start the morning!

Next on our list was checking out our local farmers market that is just right up the street.

july blog 2010 353

The market was small but had a few farmers with some great produce.

july blog 2010 352

july blog 2010 350Cute little farmers market. We showed our mom how farmers markets work and she liked it. So I think my mom will be back! Awesome!  If you are in the Fort Myers area check out this farmers market and support it! Remember no farms = no food!

One of the farmers had Lychee to sell. Michelle and I have never had one before and therefore we were willing to give it a try. You all know we love to try new things!

july blog 2010 349Looks kinda scary?!?

july blog 2010 351 Not too bad though. I was surprised how sweet the lychee was and tasted similar to a pineapple.

Have you ever tried a lychee before? If so did you like it? If not, would you ever give one a try?

We left the farmers market with a few bags of organic produce for our July 4th party ;) More on our party later (we have so many pictures will have to break up the post)!

Other news:

Remember our Pure2raw July 4th sale that ends tonight!

Till next time,

Lori

I LOVE millet! You should try the food for life millet bread. It’s gluten/wheat free and fruit juice sweetened so no added sugar. It’s got a cakey kind of texture, not like traditional bread, so I slather on some almond butter after I toast it and I swear it’s like I’m eating cake! soo good!

I beg of you to post the tiramisu and pancakes recipes :) The tiramisu looks so delicious and I bet the same for the pancakes!

I love lychees…they are abundant in the Philippines ;)

Serena, the pancake is off our Twin Cakes site for the dry mix where we sell the mix. The tiramisu needs a little more work ;)

That tiramisu looks so amazing! I haven’t had it in years, but I bet your version is delicious.

I love lychees! I actually have a few dozen of them in my fridge right now. They grow here in Miami so I usually enjoy them every summer. :)

Raw tiramisu!!! There’s a raw tiramisu on the menu at Pure Food and Wine that I am *dyyyyiiinggg* to try … or I could just make it on my own. Wow!

I love lychees…we ate them all the time when I was in Thailand last summer. Ah. May. Zing.

Ilana we have seen many raw tiramisu’s around, and never had one before so that is why we thought of trying to make it ourselves. It was not that hard to make, which I am not sure is a good thing, haha LOL

I absoluvely LOVE lychee :) Wish my farmers’ markets had them!!

That tiramisu looks amazing.

Thanks Maggie. It was fun eating a lychee. I will definitely have them again.

I love lychees. I used to get them at the Hilo Farmers market when I lived in Hawaii!

Glad you (Michelle) liked the beet smoothie. Lori – you should try it without the protein powder. I don’t like that stuff either, and I think it might be coloring your judgement! :D

Are the beet sprouts just shredded beets? All the food in this post looks SO GOOD!!!

Thanks Katie. I will give that a try! The beet sprouts we got from a local farmer here in Ft. Myers. We have never seen it before so we and the farmer are giving it a try. So far they are good but different. Very strong flavor to them.

ahhh i love lychees! they are a really popular fruit in asia but it’s hard to get them in the states unless it’s summertime so now’s the time to chow down on them! they are great to snack on – super juicy, sweet, and refreshing, and i love to put a couple into a glass of sparkling water – so good

Hey! Lychees are great :-) Haven’t had them in a while actually but they remind me of my student days when I used to often pack a few into my packed lunch box :-)
The tiramisu looks fab!

I wanted to try beets in my smoothie today but we didn’t have an fresh ones. I need some soon. (And it is basically solely bc of this article — http://womensdev.blogsmith.com/2010/06/29/beets-5-ways-to-get-these-nutrient-powerhouses-into-your-diet/ )
And congrats on sticking to your workouts :)

Your posts always make me hungry :) The tiramisu looks really good! I never saw beet sprouts, but I have been adding beets to smoothies lately. A little goes a long way, and the color alone wakes me up in the morning!

Evergreen – we have never seen beet sprouts before either, that is why we had to try them ; ) They were alright, I prefer real beets!

I love lychee! I remember when I was younger my parent’s friends made a dessert using lychee as a syrupy sweet topping and it was fantastic!

I like the color of your smoothie there. I also love smoothies, I’m glad I’ve influenced my kids into it, too! I will definitely give your smoothie version a go. I’d like to see for myself how healthier smoothies can I actually enjoy. To be quite honest, the only veggies smoothie I’ve tried so far carrots and pumpkins.
