Finding a good substitute for salads

by Lori and Michelle on July 22, 2010

Hey luvs,

Thanks to everyone for sharing their great ideas for what works for them for pre-workout snacks. Looks like most of us like to eat something little before working out and get the best out of our workouts when we do :)

Now for some workout music that people are liking currently from comments yesterday:

  1. Girl Talk
  2. Lady Gaga- Bad Romance, Just Dance, Telephone (feat Beyonce) (really any song)
  3. Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
  4. Dave Matthews – Ants Marching
  5. Black Eyed Peas… Hey Mama, Imma be, Meet me halfway
  6. MIA –Paper planes
  7. Super Mash Brothers
  8. Scissor Sisters
  9. Marilyn Manson’s version of “Tainted Love”
  10. Level 42 – Something about you
  11. Duran Duran
  12. Rufus Wain Wrights – California

Thanks for the music ideas everyone. Michelle and I agree we love all these! We like a vast range of music when we workout, but mostly upbeat tempos. ; )

Well, Michelle and I wanted to share with you all an issue we are having with salads. Yes salads! You all know we love our salads, we have posted a million salads here on our blog. We have noticed each time (present and past) we have salads are tummies do not seem to like them as much as our eyes and taste buds do ;)

Every time we enjoy a salad we tend to get really bloated, gassy and just uncomfortable. It is VERY DIFFICULT for us to accept that maybe salads are just too harsh for our stomachs at the moment.

july blog 2010 1063

Michelle and I enjoyed our last salad for awhile a few days ago.  Here we have a basic mixed salad greens topped with some local tomatoes, local cucumbers, and a homemade tahini zucchini hummus as our dressing.

We try to slow down and really CHEW our salads but it is hard ;) We tend to inhale our salads!

In honor of eating less salads we are trying to figure out delicious meals to replace them with, and we have come up with a few great ideas ;)

One being this beauty

july blog 2010 1050Here we have millet (one of our favorites) with beets, carrots, fresh basil topped with hemp seeds.

july blog 2010 1054Don’t you just love how beets turn everything red? So dramatic ;)

july blog 2010 1056So colorful and delicious!

I think I could handle having something like this everyday!!!

What about you, how do your handle salads? Maybe we just have to learn to have smaller salads ; )

Anyways, our friend Alyssa at GlutenFreeMuse gave us a wonderful award! Thanks Alyssa!

Thanks guys!! How sweet to re-award me :-) Does that mean I have to repost again?? This could get really cyclical ;-)

I love beets!! Need to roast me up some again. Have you tried the golden beets?

Answers:

-Shannon, hate it (have you ever met anyone named Shannon that you like?? Really, think about it!)
- Favorite color is Green (sage green to be exact)
- Only bite my nails if they snag, or if I’m super nervous!

Alyssa, you are too cute. No I do not think you have to re-post again LOL. Yes we love all types of beets

Ilana July 22, 2010 at 9:49 am

Alexander Hamilton!? That is SO cool. I would love to be able to trace my genealogy.

beets are so good. soooooo good. i also love how they turn everything pink (or make everything look like a murder scene)! I love salads but I try to keep them simple, with simple combinations of ingredients and components, so that it’s easy on my digestion. i also avoid tomatoes, i get so inflamed from them. it sucks because tomatoes taste so great!!

i used to bite my nails all the time! i just stopped one day…no idea why. my really bad habit is that i can never stop plucking my eyebrows! i’m OCD about it! every little hair has to go!

my middle name is Esther – it’s my father’s mother’s name and many girls on that side of the family are also named Esther. in my culture’s tradition it’s customary to name the child after the grandparents, but my grandparents were upset that it was only my middle name!

my favorite colors are both of yours – green and yellow!

Ilana that is so interesting about your middle name :) Yes beets do make everything look like a murder scene :) Again great minds think alike with liking the same colors!!!

Amber Shea @Almost Vegan July 22, 2010 at 10:15 am

I might be the only vegan in the world that hates salads…I just absolutely can’t stand chewing leafy greens!

That’s so cool about Alexander Hamilton! :]
My middle name is Shea (duh) and I love it so much that I always write it with my first name.
Fave color is definitely purple!

Amber Shea! Beautiful name :) That is so funny about you hating salads, I used to be that way growing up but as I got older I just love them but they seem to be to harsh for my tummy lately.

Megan @ Healthy Hoggin July 22, 2010 at 10:27 am

I still struggle with biting my nails, too! I can’t help it! It’s a nervous habit, I guess…

Sorry to hear the salads are giving you trouble! I know it’s so hard to give them up! But that millet/beet combo sounds wonderful!

Pure2 July 22, 2010 at 10:35 am

thanks Megan, sounds like you and Michelle do the biting of the nails, it is a hard habit to break :)

Amber Shea @Almost Vegan July 22, 2010 at 10:36 am

Aww, thank you!
That’s really too bad about the salads. I’d hate to have trouble digesting my favorite foods :[

Julia July 22, 2010 at 11:11 am

I’m the same way with salads. I love nothing more than a HUUUGE massaged kale salad, but they don’t sit well with me most of the time. I have to eat s l o w l y and hope for the best.

Reply

Pure2 July 22, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Julia, massaged salads we eat too, but they do not still the greatest with us either :( It is really hard because we really love our greens!! LOL

bitt July 22, 2010 at 1:10 pm

I get tired of salads, but digest them ok. Some people have trouble with certain raw veggies. Like the cucumber peel. I have trouble with cauliflower and had to throw out a huge dish I made. Bummer. I keep my salads fairly simple, sometimes just lettuce and a light dressing.

You could get into blended raw soups as an alternative.

Pure2 July 22, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Thanks Bitt! We are not big soup people, but maybe that will have to change.

Katie July 22, 2010 at 1:14 pm

I have been thinking the same thing about salads…but I haven’t been able to admit it yet. I feel very bloated and yuck afterwards, but they are my favorite thing to eat, so I have been suffering through. I did start topping the raw greens with steamed veggies, which seems to help a bit. I can’t eat them slowly either. :D

Thanks for the award!

My middle name is Jo, and I love it.
Favorite color is yellow.
Bad habits – I pick at my nails too.

Pure2 July 22, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Kaite, love the middle name Jo! We are thinking we might have to try eat more steamed veggies.

Krissy July 22, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Hey Sweet Ladies! As much as I don’t want to admit it, I think my tummy has trouble with salads too, I continue to eat them on a daily basis – but the more I think about it, the more I think I should follow your lead – do you find lightly steamed veggies and cooked grains are better for your tummies??
xoxo love you girls!

Pure2 July 22, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Krissy, I know it is very hard for us to give up salads. We just hope to take a break, and maybe try again later down the road. For the steamed veggies and cooked grains for now we both did fine. No problems, so we will see. We sometimes hate how we have to “think” so much about what we eat, afraid of feeling bad or sick afterward. : ( no fun

Jackie (Peaces of Earth) July 22, 2010 at 2:01 pm

So funny you posted this! I’ve actually been thinking the same thing about salads. :( Like Ilana I’m trying to make them simpler but sometimes I just feel so ick after them! It’s very sad.

My middle name is Ann, like everyone else in the world haha. I don’t mind it, but I rarely use it.

My favorite colors are green and pink like Michelle. :)

OMG, yes I had a terrible terrible nail biting habit. It was so bad since I’ve literally been biting my nails since I had teeth. I tried to stop SO many times and couldn’t. This is weird, but after I changed my diet I just stopped. I don’t really understand why but maybe because I was happier and less stressed? Or a deficiency? I don’t really know. Now, I still sometimes bite them but not nearly as badly!

Pure2 July 22, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Jackie good point about nail biting. I have cut way back on biting mine too. ; )

Lauren July 22, 2010 at 7:02 pm

My middle name is Elizabeth too! :) Favorite color..obv..pink! :)

Salads tend to be okay with me (surprisingly), BUT, I can eat them (kale) for months straight and then have to take a little break, because they start making me feel yucky..Weird!

Ahh thank you guys so much! you would be one of my winners too but I’ve been reading your blog for a while now so I guess you’re not a newly discovered blog for me :) Love you guys, hope your tummies feel better!!!

Pure2 July 23, 2010 at 4:28 am

Bananas for Bananas- thank you, our tummies are doing a little better.

Camille (Raw Candy) July 22, 2010 at 8:50 pm

You ladies are so sweet for tagging me! xo

I can never get enough salads, especially big ones that involve kale. I have noticed over the past year or so that two veggies that give me digestive grief are mushrooms, and sweet potatoes with the peel still on. I’m not sure why! But I find it takes me forever to digest these thing.

Reply

Pure2 July 23, 2010 at 4:30 am

Camille- isn’t funny how certain foods take longer to digest than others?? We are not mushroom people either. And on rare occasions we have sweet potatoes, but seem to do fine with them.

Sarah (GF vegan) July 23, 2010 at 2:12 am

Thanks for the award! :D You guys are so kind. I will get onto sharing it asap.

Re. salads, I can’t eat too many of them either. I’ve just started juicing and I found yesterday that after my vege juice in the morning I couldn’t handle my usual salad for lunch so I’m going to have to see how that goes. Love your millet combo! Have some in the fridge all ready so may have that for lunch.

I’m back in uni (for my third-ish degree) studying nursing and it’s great! That said, I would love to gain some qualifications in nutrition and health. I think I’m destined to be a student forever… which the husband wouldn’t be too happy with! x

Thank you SO much for passing this onto me! My middle name is Ann and I love it because it’s after my grandmother who just passed. I never really felt so attached to it, until now. That is a very interesting fact you are related to Alexander Hamilton. very cool!

OMGGGG!!! Thank you so much. I’m over the moon! :) Much love, ladies! The best thing about this award is that there are so many new blogs to discover. Oatmeal diaries?! I’m so there! :)

About a week or two ago, just before “the demon” came, I had the same problem with salads. You’re not alone there. It must be another annoying IBS thing.

I think if you ate your salads without added fats you would not have any problems. I feel so much better after I stopped eating so much fat, I just use a splash of apple cider vinegar, a little pepper & salt. My salads taste amazing & I never have any digestive problems. I learned this from a low-fat raw coach & he is right! I use to make an avocado dressing on my salad that I loved but my stomach didn’t like. I no longer put seeds, oils, nuts on my veggies or greens & my stomach is fine.
