Second time around

Hey luvs,

Looks like some people like their middle names while others do not. I like my middle name, I have the same one as my mother. And Michelle’s is after one of our great grandmothers.

It also seems many of you bite your nails just like Michelle ;) And a few of you love the color yellow just like me!!

I guess salads upsetting tummies is not an un-common thing. Looks like many of your experience similar issues. Unfair to those who have strong stomachs that can handle salads ;) Just kidding. I am just jealous because I love salads and not much of a soup person, so we have to find other ways of getting our greens and veggies in!

Today Michelle and I went for a RUN! It has been well over 2 months since we last ran! But we both woke up this morning after getting 5 hours of sleep and just felt like running like we do this everyday ;)

I put my running shoes on, grabbed my stop watch, and hit the road. Michelle and I ran for 30 minutes today. Broken up like this:

  • 10 minute run
  • 1 minute walk
  • 8 minute run
  • 3 minute walk
  • 6 mintue sprint run
  • 2 minute walk (cool down)

After our run we did some of our favorite Tracy Anderson exercises for about 15 minutes.

How did we feel?

Great. The first ten minutes of our run were a little rough but we eventually got in the rhythm. The last 6 minutes of our run we really picked up speed to really push ourselves.

Ever since the Insanity dvd program we have a love of high intensity workouts! We felt Insanity really helped strengthen our endurance/cardio levels :)

Post-workout shake:

  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 scoop SunWarrior protein
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/2 tsp Ormus supergreens powder

Blend and sip!

The frozen blueberries really help make this a cold and refreshing simple shake!

We already mentioned our first initial thoughts on these two items before here. Our thoughts second time around?

clip_image002

We love the Ormus Supergreens powder! One of the best green powders we have tried. As far as the brown rice protein powder, lets just say we have learned to like it. I am starting to get used to the flavor and texture, still a little gritty for me, but I have noticed I do like it blended up with berries. Michelle and I like having the rice protein to give our bodies something different besides hemp.

I think I have noticed that I prefer things mixed, not one dominate flavor. Hence why I love Vega, it is a mix of hemp, brown rice, and pea protein powders. I do not like only one powder…but a little bit of all of them together. I know everyone likes different things and picks up different taste and textures, this is just what I have noticed for ME. Which is one reason Michelle and I’s Twin Cakes products are different than most products on the market, we use a blend of gluten-free whole grains. Every ingredient has it own unique taste and texture, and mix them together you have yourself one tasty product ; ) At least we think so!

Maybe I am just sensitive to protein powders taste? Who knows? But I do plan on continuing to have SunWarrior’s rice protein because it is the best tasting rice protein powder on the market in my opinion :)

Last night’s dinner was another substitute for my typical salads for dinner

july blog 2010 1066A bowl of quinoa with onions, fresh basil, more beets on top of shredded collard greens.

july blog 2010 1068

Loved it this dinner but the raw shredded collards were a little rough on the tummy. Lesson learned collards need to blended up in my green smoothies, steamed, or finely shredded and wilted down with lemon juice :)

The quinoa with vegetables was delicious of course! I personally do not think you can go wrong with quinoa ;)

Do you like quinoa?

If so, how do you like to prepare it? Sweet or savory?

If no, would you ever try quinoa? If no, than why?

Is every ready for Recipe Friday ?!?! We are :)

Till next time,

Lori

I personally used to get an upset stomach when eating a salad and really could not eat large portions of veggies, but when I switched to eating healthy all of the time these issues disappeared. Now I can down greens like it’s nothing. I think my body just needed to get off the junk and on to the green :)

I love quinoa! I don’t have it too often, once every few weeks or less but my hubby lives on it. He eats it plain salads or with sweet potatoes. I like it with salad or dressed like I would popcorn: salt, nutro yeast, oregano, olive oil. nice and hot. never had it sweet but i have used quinoa flour to GF bake with.

Yay for grains! I like mixing salads WITH grains, as you’ve probably noticed :)

And I bet kelp noodles are a good substitute, too.

Quinoa is probably my favourite grain :) If I am craving something warm in the morning, my go to breakfast is always flaked quinoa – sooo comforting :)

Quinoa is my favorite grain, but I don’t like it sweet. I’ve never tried collards in a smoothie, but I was wondering what I was going to do with all those greens in my garden…Thanks for the tip!

Great run today! I’m actually kind of looking forward to doing stuff like that when I finish Insanity – but I agree that it has done wonders for my cardiovascular fitness! And those push ups! My arms have been sore for three straight days.

I’m yet to find a green powder I love more than Amazing Grass. It just tastes so smooth. The blueberries make those smoothies gorgeous. I made a smoothie today with frozen grapes, peaches, strawberries and a banana. Yum!

Quinoa is my FAVORITE. I have a love affair with quinoa and love it hot or cold, by itself or on top of salads. Yours looks divine, love the red color!! I still need to try sweet quinoa, I bet it’s just as fab as savory.

I am loving my Sun Warrior protein powder, but I always mix it with hemp. Maybe you should try half and half? It doesn’t seem gritty to me at all and I barely taste it!

Your quinoa dish looks great – it’s one of my favourite grains and reasonably priced from the bulk bins. I have never tried it sweet, surprisingly!

I missed your post about salads, but I can relate! I find with the harsher greens (collards, kale, broccoli, cabbage, etc) that they need something done to them before I can eat them. Lately, I’ve found that marinating them in lemon juice (or acv) and salt actually is more effective than steaming them, in terms of how well my tummy copes with them.

If my husband liked quinoa, I’d probably try it sometimes (although my general conclusion is that I do better if I avoid all grains – even rice protein powder tends to make me sick unless it’s a small quantity in a multiple protein powder). But I’ve only had it a few times. I used to sprout it and make quinoa tabbouleh for potlucks, people loved it. Maybe should try that again.

Love those beet pictures and loved to read of your exuberance about your workout today!

    love

quinoa…meh, take it or leave it. I am just not that into grains. I like carbs from plants, fat, sugar. LOL Grains and protein, are just meh to me. I can dine on green food and raw desserts for ummmm…forever!

Protein powder, interesting that you dont really like Sun Warr that much. Sounds like you deal with it but dont really love it. I wouldnt say I love it either, per se, I just dont love protein powders BUT compared to Vega, it’s hands down!!! wayyyyyy preferred for me ! I am not a Vega girl really. Too gritty/earty. I am excited to try the hemp i got from Tempt and see how that goes.

My middle name is Harmony. I changed my first, middle, & last name legally a year ago and before that was going by these names for 6 mos or so.

Congrats to all the award winners !

I LOVE quinoa. It’s one of those “grains” that I forget about it. Then when I have it again I’m reminded how awesome it is and wonder how I forgot about it! Haven’t tried it sweet but I’m thinking i may start having sweet quinoa and millet dishes for breakfast. x

Averie – yay we prefer carbs from plants and fat too, but do not do well with sugar, so having grains every once in awhile gives us something else to eat. I wish I could live off raw desserts, haha ; ) Love the name Harmony!! It suits you well ; )

I typically like my quinoa savory but made a chocolate “bread pudding” with quinoa once that my husband loved, so I am definitely willing to try it either way. How do you like the Tracy Anderson videos? I have been contemplating buying them.

I have not tried many protein powders, but I have tried hemp and after my initial taste, I really started to like it. I make a little chocolate fudge concoction with it and it is so good! I don’t do smoothies…I just haven’t gotten into it. That blueberry smoothie looks delicious though! I am a huge fan of quinoa! I like it sweet and savory. I made a pudding with it a while back with vanilla protein powder and peanut butter! Now that was good!

I love quinoa! The first time I ever tried it, I cooked it with cinnamon and almond milk as a hot breakfast cereal, but now I usually prefer a savory version at dinner time. I’ve even gotten my husband to prefer it as his dinner-time grain! I make it instead of brown rice now for him, since I think it’s nutritionally better.

I love quinoa! I’ve had it for breakfast many times…and I’ve used it in your gluten free mac and cheese…and I put it in salads…it’s really versatile. I can eat it either sweet or savoury.
I’ve been wanting to try Sun Warrior for a long time, but haven’t seen it anywhere yet…most people really like it. Interesting that you aren’t a huge fan…I also like Vega a lot. I’m not usually picky with protein powders, although I did have a really gritty hemp brand once that put a bad taste in my mouth.

Lauren – we use quinoa for our mac and cheese too! I know, we read about all this great hype behind sunwarrior, and we felt like we had to like it, but honestly I cannot say we love it. It is a good product and the best rice protein we have had before, we still enjoy having it.
