Ideas for skin care and a new hummus

by Lori and Michelle on August 12, 2010

Hey friends,

Lori and I both appreciate everyone’s kind words about acne. Not a fun topic for many to talk about, so thank you.

We have received emails from readers discussing different things and one common topic is skin problems.  Today I wanted to share some things we have learned from others, so that maybe it could help someone else.

9 tips for skin care:

  • Eat a clean diet (no dairy, because it is a common factor to skin problems)
  • Watch you intake of healthy fats (although some people do great with high fat, so you have to play around with how much you can handle)
  • Limit your consumption of coconut products (oil, meat, flakes)
  • Could be yeast (Candida) related
  • Have a regular face care routine and find a product that works for you
  • keep you colon clean
  • take probiotics and/or have fermented foods and drinks
  • Apple cider vinegar, aloe, and coconut oil are great to rub on face
  • MSM is a great supplement

Where do we stand on these tips?

First, they are all great and we appreciate our readers sharing what has worked for them with us. We only hope we can help others….although we are not experts, just learning from our own experiences.

We do feel food is an important part for having clear skin. But for us we have not noticed a direct relation to our skin problems. How do we know this? We have eliminated things from our diet before, one example was nuts. We did not notice any improvements skin wise from eating no nuts, although our energy was better. Second, a few people told us coconut butter and/or any part of coconut caused them to break out. Lori and I have gone through periods where we ate little to no coconut and again did not see a difference for us. This is just what we have noticed in the past and it could change as we are still playing around with our eats. Although we know food can play an major role for some people.

Keeping your colon clean is so important for so many reasons. Lori and I both have and still do get colonics! We have the best colon hydrotherapist, hey Kim! Keep in mind that a toxic colon can cause breakouts plus other health issues.

Next up, yeast…ugh, yes we have struggled with yeast problems and sometimes still feel like we do. I mean we were on birth control for 10 years, so it killed our good bacteria : ( So we believe in the power of probiotics, whatever form that may be. Although we prefer eating or drinking (kefir, yogurt, fermented veggies, sauerkraut, water kefir, kombucha) to get good bacteria. But there is nothing wrong with a pill or liquid form, we feel it is important just as long as you are getting it, although be careful because some can still contain dairy!

And we already discussed before things we like for our face! We have always loved rubbing aloe on our face, if you have not tried it you must. It is so soothing and you can just feel your pores getting smaller!

Lastly, msm as a supplement. We have taken msm before and we still do, although we do forget sometimes to have it. MSM is an organic form of sulfur.  If you are new to it, start small and gradually increase your dosage. It is best to mix it in water.

Okay I hope I covered everything. Now for something a little more fun and easier to talk about FOOD!

Remember when we made beet hummus. Well the other day, I was roasting up some butternut squash, while I was also making up some more hummus, so I threw some roasted squash in.

The real L.A. love story. August 12, 2010 at 7:26 am

thank you girls for posting about topics that a lot of us are embarrassed to ask about. i have had acne on and off for most of my teens and adult life but my skin is usually clear these days. i’m 23 now and have tried everything under the sun, like apple cider vinegar and proactiv. what works for me now is sleep, lots of water, and less wheat. my sister’s bf used to have bad acne and once he cut out ALL milk products, his face completely cleared up.

Thanks real LA – I am glad to hear that you and your sis BF have figured out what works for you! Yes acne is not the most flattering topic but we feel one that needs to be addressed :)

Your dessert looks great! I love dark chocolate, the darker the better. :) Love the hummus as well!

Thanks girls! I just read both posts. Acne hasn’t so much been a problem for me, but I guess you could say I had a similar visible woe … chronic hives. Also not pretty, and itchy too! Anywho, I have had them for years, not gone (still haven’t found the cause after much trial and error like you have done!), but much improved and still working on it. Just an autoimmune glitch.

Anywho, I have found a natural treatment that really helps the skin in general, and should help to reduce scars. Email me and I will explain. It is quite simple actually, but sometimes I feel funny writing these things in comments :)

Alisa, thanks. We will give you an email!

Where is the info that Alisa was going to share about reducing scars? Can you post it? or tell me how to find it?

Very interesting tips and recipes!! Thank you!

I used to ONLY like dark chocolate but now I really dont discriminate – as long as it’s vegan haha.

I also see a direct correlation between what I eat and how my skin looks. A few weeks ago I decided I would try to eat some dairy just to see (how can I know what will happen if I don’t try it, I guess was my reasoning) and I broke out SO bad I can’t take it! Everything is a learning experience and that was mine – I will NOT be repeating that experiment!!

I really appreciate all these skin posts because it’s really my biggest “health” issue right now!!

Ilana yes sometimes you have to experiment to find answers! We all can learn from ‘mistakes’ haha. I am glad you have been enjoying these posts!! HUGS

Dark chocolate is my absolute fave! And i also love mixing cooked veggies with raw veggies- i especially love topping my leafy salads with roasted veg :)

I’m pretty much love most desserts apart from coffee flavoured ones, ew. x

Noelle August 12, 2010 at 8:41 am

WOW! I clicked onto your beet hummus recipe and I love it! I am going to have to try that. I have a beet staring at me in the frdge. I HAVE been dealing with acne and been wondering if it is the coconut. COuld you email me noellsky(at)gmail (dot) com ? Coconut oil is OK for the face though?

Pure2 August 12, 2010 at 9:09 am

Yes Noelle, we will shoot you an email more about the coconut issues!

hihorosie August 12, 2010 at 9:18 am

mmm…chocolate…I used to be all over milk but these days I prefer dark. So good! Plus dairy free. ;)

Golden beets – they’re so pretty! I love them. I like how you prepared yours. I’ve only had them juiced but look great in a salad.

Speaking of salads. Your heirloom salad looks AMAZING! So simple but yummilicious!

Thanks for the skin tips. Always helpful. :) Another tip: HYDRATE!

Heidi, yes Hydrate it key!! ;)

JoLynn-dreaminitvegan August 12, 2010 at 10:27 am

Beautiful butternut squash salad!
My son is going through puberty right now, he’s vegan too, he has a cleansing routine and while it’s better if he sticks to it, most of the time it doesn’t matter. I think his is all hormonal because one day his complexion is a mess, forehead and nose area and a couple of days later it’s clearing up so nicely. No rhyme or reason.

Reply

Pure2 August 12, 2010 at 10:34 am

JoLynn, yes I would agree – hormones can play a major role in skin issues, I suffer from that as well!

Lori August 12, 2010 at 11:01 am

DE-LICIOUS Eats there! I totally go for dark chocolate… or raw cacao! Yum! I want one of those little vegan kisses you’ve got there.

And you two are the hummus and socca queens. Love it!

And as far as skin care, thanks again for the shout out. I appreciate it but also it let’s people know that if their current routine of skin care is not working, there are other options out there. I’m a 100% all natural kind of person. Nothing touches my body (well… except wine or a martini…;) ) that is not natural, but I HAD TRIED EVERYTHING to clear up my skin and nothing worked except Rodan + Fields. And it worked well! (Coconut oil totally made my skin break out, too…)

Anyway, if there are major skin issues that someone has, Rodan + Fields products can help- aging/wrinkles, sun damage (this one is amazing), acne, and sensitive/dry skin. :)

p.s. I’m totally posting about your AMAZING chocolate frosting today… blew my mind how great it was!

Lori you are so right! You have to do what you can natural but sometimes you might need something else to really help a problem. I think the products you sell are great and will help many people. Thanks for the sweet comment about our frosting!! It is our favorite as well ;) XOXO

Katie August 12, 2010 at 12:38 pm

The darker the better, I say.

I’ve made butternut squash hummus a bunch of times – I’ve used curry to season it once, and then made a sweeter version with orange juice and maple syrup. Both were great!

Pure2 August 12, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Katie – your hummus sounds great, we will have to check it out ; )

bitt August 12, 2010 at 2:04 pm

I think food can play a factor in skin. For me and my husband we have noticed that certain foods trigger breakouts. But so can stress. Usually it’s a combination.

For chocolate–the darker the better!

I love mixing raw veggies with cooked veggies, too! In fact, I’m already dreaming of making a roasted veggie salad tonight!

As far as chocolate goes– I prefer it DARK! I don’t even think milk chocolate really tastes like “chocolate” anymore! I’m drooling over your “hershey’s kisses” right now!

Ela August 12, 2010 at 6:13 pm

What a beautiful post! Nice to hear from you. So many delicious foods of the season, artfully arranged.

I love chocolate as dark as it will go! Feel kinda sad that I’m not supposed to have it because of adrenal problems – I’m thinking I’ll buy a chocolate flavor essence and see if it fills the gap.

I’m surprised that some say that avoiding coconut helps with acne – I’ve always thought coconut helps my skin! My husband just mentioned a day or two ago how much silkier my skin is since I’ve been eating more coconut oil.

love

Ela, that is great the coconut oil helps your skin!!! Keep doing it then :) Everyone’s skin reacts differently, but glad to hear yours is going well!

MMMM I can’t wait to try out your butternut squash hummus! It looks delicious!

I love all chocolate! What are the chocolate goodies in your picture? They almost look like brownies.

Pure2 August 12, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Lauren, you are right the chocolate in our pictures is our raw brownie bites :) They are delicious our favorite!

Pure2 February 5, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Lanee, Alisa told us to use straight vitamin C powder as a face scrub, your face will tingle and burn a little bit from it. Just start small, and rinse off with lukewarm water.
