Today I have a recipe that is delicious and fun to make!
Everyone likes a good meatless burger that is healthy for them right? One that contains few ingredients, easy to prepare and taste great. Well I think I have that recipe to share today.
Michelle and I enjoyed these meatless burger earlier this week and loved it! I know there are many versions of lentil or bean burgers out there but this is one version of our burger. We used to make all types of gluten free ‘bean’ burgers all the time, we love them! And this beautiful lady had a wonderful recipe as well.
Lately we have been craving lentils so in honor of our craving we made some lentil burgers
Oh boy did these meatless burgers hit the spot for us. They were full of flavor and yet so simple! If you are looking for a simple burger that is different yet satisfying you have to give these a try! Best of all we made these burgers with no flour – so this recipe is great for those who can’t have gluten/wheat like us!
Pure2Raw Recipe: Lentil Cilantro Burger
- 2 cups cooked lentils (cook according to package – we used sprouted lentils)
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro
- 2 garlic cloves, peeled
- 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled
- 1 tbsp coriander seeds
- 1 1/2 tsp allspice
- coconut oil for pan
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 10 tbsp water
Mustard topping – we did not write down what we did – we just threw ingredients into the vitamix and blended. You may use any mustard sauce you like. Our mustard sauce was a mix of zucchini, cashew, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, sea salt and spices.
To make burgers:
After lentils are cooked, drain them if there is any extra water. Scoop out 1 cup of the cooked lentils and place in food processor along with fresh cilantro, garlic, ginger, coriander seeds, and allspice. Pulse till combined.
Add in remaining cooked lentils and pulse a few times. We left our burgers a little on the ‘chunky’ side!
In a small bowl add in your 2 tbsp chia seeds with 6 tbsp water. Let sit for about 10 minutes.
In a large bowl pour in your pulsed burger mixture and add in the chia gel. We ended up adding 4 more tbsp of water. And stir together.
We used a cookie scooper to make our burgers.
Place shaped burgers onto a warm skillet and sautée on each side for a few minutes or till golden brown.
Enjoy
Lentil Cilantro Burgers before being pan sautéed in coconut oil on skillet
Lentil burgers all done!
May eat plain or with a little ‘mustard’ on top!
Now that is one delicious lentil burger
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Michelle and I are getting things ready for our farmers markets tomorrow.
Have you made a lentil burger before? Any meatless burger before? Black bean, garbanzo bean. etc…
What is your favorite burger topping?
Till next time,
Lori

thank you for this recipe!! I normally make black bean burgers.. never thought to do lentil. I will try this. Perfect as I’m transitioning to a vegetarian diet. love your ideas
I’ve made Lentils before (Mama Pea recipe) and chickpea burgers, kidney bean burgers…guess I like bean/lentil burgers.
Could I use flax instead of chia seeds in your recipe do you think?
Little Bookworm – we love bean/lentil burgers too ; ) And yes you could flax instead of chia seeds.
Delicious! I love lentils so much:) I love burgers too- lentils, beans, soaked nuts, root veggies, little bit of roasted garlic or sundried tomatoes for more flavours. My favourite topping is something sweet and sour, like homemade ketchup or plum jam with a little apple cider vinegar.
Eimear – something sweet and sour sounds great!
Ive made tofu veggie burgers from scratch and then I have made lentil burgers but they kinda fell apart on me. My fave thing to top a burger with is pickled jalapenos for extra kick
Jazzii, you are brave with the jalapenos
HAHA
I do a lentil quinoa burger that is my all time favorite! I made a HUGE batch of them and ate them way too fast. I love bean burgers on salads with pickles, mustard, ketchup and potato croutons on top! Dang, now I am hungry! Have a great weekend ladies!
Sarena, we ate our burgers a little too fast too, LOL! I am hungry now too just thinking about them! HUGS
Your burgers look great! Thanks for the shout out.
I love ketchup and pickles. And not necessarily on anything.
Have a great weekend ladies!
Thanks Mama Pea – your burgers looked great too!!! Have a great weekend too.
That looks like my dinner tonight… thanks for the recipe! I can’t wait to make it! Seriously, seeing that made me super hungry. Yum. I love that you used no flours (gf or otherwise) or fillers. Lentils as a base is new. Never tried using them. Nice idea!
But why would you eat it plain if you can top it with mustard?!
I’ve made quite a few bean burgers in my day, but I love my Italian white bean burgers and my portobella black bean burgers. I got my mom addicted to the black bean ones…and she is NOT a cook!
Katie – we use to make a really good black bean burger…umm maybe we will bring that recipe back out!!
Thanks for the idea! I just made a huge pot of lentils, now I know just what to do with them. Love It!
Yum! Flax-free too. Thanks for a great dinner idea.
i have made l lentil and bean burgers but one thing i never ever liked was burgers. by age 7 i never ate them. turkey and chicken and salmon burgers have been tried as well, and i dont like those much either. So bean burgers, well, they are fine…but only if I can slather/flood them in ketchup! what can i saw, i am just not a burger girl
Sprouted lentils — but you didn’t cook them after sprouting – right? Thanks,
Kay – the lentils were sprouted, but we did cook them. But you can have them raw sprouted if your prefer. Thank you.
OMG those burgers look and sound sooooooooo amazing!!!!
Totally loving the ginger and cilantro action in this. I usually make a spicier curry red pepper burger, but am looking to change it up. Rock on!
can you use this recipe in the dehydrator like the beet hummus burgers? do you think it’d make a huge difference?
Kat you could always try. Not sure how it would come out. But always worth trying if you like raw lentils. I am actually learning that I prefer them cooked. Let us know how it goes if you do.
I made these burgers today. They looked great, and I loved the idea of using soaked chia seeds to help give them shape, but the flavor combination didn’t suit our taste buds. Perhaps its an acquired taste? Neither my husband nor my son nor I nor the dog could eat them. I am an experienced cook and its rare that I make something that the family doesn’t enjoy, but I am new to gluten-free cooking, and have only begun cooking with lentils recently. Do you have a different lentil burger recipe?
Hello Katie, cilantro has a strong flavor, and we keep our flavors simple, sorry it did not suit your tastebuds. But everyone does have different taste for things. We have a few recipes with lentils, here are two of our favs http://www.pure2raw.com/2011/02/dairy-free-egg-free-gluten-free-lentil-pie-recipe/ and http://www.pure2raw.com/2011/01/organic-lentil-gluten-free-egg-free-vegan-burgers/ I hope this work out better for you. Sorry for your trouble with this recipe.
Yummy and super healthy! Thanks for sharing!!!
