We finally got around to trying those lovely hemp products we received samples (we did not pay for these samples) from Living Harvest. Thanks again!
As I mentioned before we have used Living Harvest Unsweetened Vanilla milk in the past and loved it (which we bought with our own money). Living Harvest non-dairy milks have always been the brand we have used.
Although we do not drink much “milk” anymore (because dairy does not do well with us). Not even non-dairy alternatives, no real reason, we just don’t crave it or use non-dairy alternatives that often.
Though we thought about trying out these dairy free milk alternatives in our smoothies since we have never really tried it before. We have seen many others put some sort of milk or non-dairy alternative in their smoothies, so we thought lets try it too
Last week, after our workout we made a delicious chocolate shake with hemp protein.
Looks a little different the most hemp proteins we have tried. I know it is not raw, so I guess that explains it.
Did about 1 cup of the chocolate hemp milk to 3-4 scoops of hemp protein powder. Blend in blender!
Results: We loved it! It was smooth and had a decent flavor and texture to it. The chocolate hemp milk has a good flavor although it does contain sugar! We prefer the unsweetened hemp milk!
Is this something we would eat everyday? No
As we do not have a lot of “protein powders” in general. They do not sit well with us, but we do like to have them a few times a week : )
Last week while I was in Charlotte I made Gary a hemp based smoothie every morning and he loved them!! YAY!
Here is what I did:
Banana Vanilla Tropical Smoothie:
- 1 cup hemp vanilla milk
- 1/2 -1 cup water
- 1 frozen banana
- 2 handfuls of spinach
- 1/2 bag of frozen fruit blend (mango, pineapple, strawberry) (it was a small bag)
- 3 scoops of hemp protein
Blend in blender
**note I did not really measure the fruit I just threw some in there till I got the texture and flavor I wanted!!
Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie:
- 1 cup chocolate hemp milk
- 1/2 cup- 1 cup water
- 1 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 – 1/2 cups strawberries
- 3 scoops hemp protein
- 2 handfuls of spinach
Blend in blender!
You can use whatever dairy alternative you like and add less or more liquid depending on your desired thickness of smoothie. Also add more or less fruit depending on your level of sweetness.
We really like Living Harvest non-dairy hemp milk for our dairy substitutes! The hemp protein powder also had nice texture and flavor. Great for those who like protein powders!
Thanks again Living Harvest for sending us the samples. We still have to try the hemp ice cream
Hopefully later we will have a fun video for you all to watch! It is still in the works
Twins question: Are you a milk person?
If you are sensitive to dairy like us, what is your non-dairy milk alternative you like? Why? Do you go by price or flavor when choosing a non-dairy milk alternative?
Or are you a person who always makes your own ‘milk’?
Till next time,
Lori

Hi, it’s Jennifer from Living Harvest. I’m so happy to hear that you are enjoying the products. The smoothies look great!
Jennifer – yes love hemp products! Thank you.
I don’t have a problem with soy, so when I want a really hearty breakfast, I like steelcut oats cooked in unsweetened soy milk. The sweetened stuff here is usually fairly ok, it’s sweetened with apple juice. The odd time I crave something crunchy with an ice cold liquid, I like vanilla rice milk. For my smoothies, I usually just blend up shelled hemp seeds with water as the base. I love homemade almond milk for drinking and I’m keen to try out other homemade nut and seed milks. I recently tried a coconut-based milk (sort of watered down coconut milk). I thought it tasted weird though, I bet blending up a little coconut flesh and water would be cheaper and tastier! It’s called Kara-http://www.karadairyfree.com/.
My favourite fake dairy products are yogurt though. I buy plain soy yogurt and jazz it up with vanilla extract and fruit. I made my own oat yogurt for a while but it was always a bit runny.
Eimear – we always do hemp seeds in our smoothies too. Never heard of Kara, thanks for sharing.
I am always tempted to get hemp protein powder from TJ’s but never do! I want to try it though, and your shake looks tasty
I love hemp!! I put hemp protein in my smoothie this morning.
I’m not really a milk person, but I have been using almond milk in my smoothies lately. I’m liking the extra creaminess it gives. I also made Gena’s hemp milk last week and loved it. I think I’ll definitely be making it more often!! Fat + protein = it’s perfect!
Glad you guys are liking the hemp! I love hemp seeds so much, they are my favorite seed and favorite protein source.
Once in a while I’ll have hemp protein powder, but never really hemp milk. I am not a milk person at all, so I would never drink it straight up…and when it comes to smoothies or other recipes that may involve milk, I often just use water. I don’t think there is a huge taste difference. I have made home made almond milk before, but I get too impatient to make it often and I really don’t think I need it. If I’m going to go through the process of soaking nuts, I would rather make a new raw recipe with them than use them for milk!
Lauren, we get impatient with making our own milks too
We like using nuts for sauces and recipes too!
Yum! They all look so great! I’m not a huge milk person but I do heart coconut milk. A lot!
Heidi, oh we love coconut milk as well!!!! YUM
I can’t have dairy either and I only use almond milk. I’ve tried others, but almond milk is all that I like. I’ve never been a drink a glass of milk person, even as a kid, so I just use it in stuff.
Katie, I hated drinking milk out of a glass too, I only like using in recipes.
I make my own almond milk, it’s so much tastier that way. Store bough nondairy milk is always too sugary for me.
I do love hemp protein. Never tried this brand.
Bitt, I agree the store milks are too sugary for us too!
Smoothies sound great. I have made my nut milks in the past but they don’t keep as long or last as long as I use them so I buy mine, although not often. When I do buy almond milk (which I prefer) I get unsweetened kind. Flavor and price are not much of a concern, I’m usually looking for good quality, not a lot of additives, etc.
Hmm, I have only tried the Manitoba hemp protein powders and they definitely look different. How are the Tempt ones not raw and so different? Any insight?
I’ve been allergic to dairy my whole life, but don’t miss it one bit! I do use milk alternative in smoothies, and occasionally for cooking, but that’s about it. I’ve tried to switch to water for smoothies, but it doesn’t quite work for me yet!
Alisa – they have some other ingredients added to the Tempt hemp protein, and how they mill it into flours. Manitoba hemp is pure hemp.
Dairy is _awful_ for me, but I love smoothies. So I make nut milk every few days, varying what kind of nut. But when I was in Fairbanks away from home, I bought sugar free almond milk and it seemed to work fine.
Great review of the tempt products – I’d love to get to try some!
love
