Meatless Inspirations

by Lori and Michelle on August 26, 2010

Hello luvs,

Wow, thank you for all the wonderful comments and emails about us sharing our thoughts on veganism.  THANK YOU for your support ;) We love you all!!! Looks like we all dislike food labels and putting pressure on ourselves is never a good thing.

As Michelle discussed her issues with labels and being vegan I have similar feelings. I am not a fan of food labels of any kind and from everyone’s comments yesterday no one really is. So I am glad I am not alone there :)

People ask me if my boyfriend is vegan? No he is not.

Does it bother me that he still eats meat? Yes and no.

I admit when I first starting really changing my diet my views on the world changed too. I was the ‘hard-core’ person who would pressure on my family to eat the way I did… now a few years later I have learned that putting pressure on others got me NOWHERE! Now I just let my family and friends do their own thing and I do my thing! I try to ‘hopefully’ inspire others my leading by example ;)

My boyfriend still does eat chicken and fish from time to time. But since I do all the cooking in the house he rarely sees meat which he is fine with him. He told me ever since traveling overseas he really does not crave meat as much anymore. Typically when we go out to eat that is when he will get meat. I told him that I am fine with him having meat occasionally but I prefer him to buy the meat locally.

I know Michelle feels the same way I do about realizing that this is not a perfect world and people are still going to eat their meat. But we just hope more and more people start to really consider where their meat is coming from and to support their local community instead of the large scale factories.

For more great reads about this subject our dear friend Gena recently discussed her views as well along with another dear friend Averie shared her thoughts.

Here are some meatless inspirations (meals that I have made for my boyfriend that are also allergy friendly and he loved them all)

Creamy rice with sautéed veggies ( I used our raw zucchini tahini hummus as the creamy dressing)

Another meal was quinoa with roasted broccoli

Along with pan sautéed turnips and cauliflower with daiya cheese

Looks like meatless meals are just as bold in flavor, texture, color, and satisfaction! YAY!

Now I am not trying to put anyone down or anyone’s significant other down. I was just trying to show that I started off being that person who was harsh when people ate meat (especially my BF), but over time I let it go and let people eat what they want. And now my family and my boyfriend really enjoy meatless meals. Patience and leading by example with no hard feelings is key!

Ok enough serious talk now… we really did enjoy everyone’s comments on yesterdays post. It means the world to us to hear from all of you and see different people’s perspective on things. We learn so much from our readers!

This morning Michelle and I did another bodyrock tv exercise call the 600 rep sexier toned body. It was a tough one. A little different than some of her other workouts because the workout was based off all reps not time. It was a nice change but I do prefer the time interval workouts :)

We have gotten a few request for what our favorite bodyrock tv workout is… and that is tough. We like them all (well the ones we have done so far). Here are some good ones to get started with:

Fat ass burn off

Fcuk the gym

Sexy body breakdown

If you try any of these workouts please let us know. We would love to hear what you think!

Till next time,

Lori

Daiya cheese…drool!

A few more thoughts: I appreciate your honesty and writing on your blog. Sometimes posts like these get people (the commenters) down on all vegans. I hope people keep in perspective that just because people have in common the commitment to be vegan does not mean all vegans are the same. And I think it is hurtful to assume all vegans are one way, just like other stereotyping is hurtful like towards people who are a certain religion or sexual orientation. That being said I will work harder to try to be a compassionate vegan to humans to work against the rudeness some other vegans have put forth.

Bitt you are an amazing person and very inspiring to others! And you are so right, not all vegans are the same! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and support on this tough issue! It is not an easy subject to discuss but one worth bringing to people’s attention. HUGS!

You guys are so right to lead by example. None of us are perfect, but think if you show people that you aren’t “living without” they will follow. My kids and husband rarely eat meat now since I stopped. I still prepare it, but only when it is asked for. I think food is a habit and you can change it. Since we have been eating mostly vegetarian (I always eat vegetarian), they don’t crave it as much and it is getting less and less. I would never force anyone to eat the way I do. Just like I would not like it if they did that to me. You two are definitely on the right path and as always, thank you for sharing yourselves with the rest of us!

I eat a high-raw vegan diet and I have been veg for quite a while. I was actually vegan when I met my fiance 5 years ago and then I dabbled in pescatarian food. He still eats meat…at every meal. He grills almost every night. He refuses to try tofu which is not neccessary anyway. He is still of the mindset that he needs meat. He has begun to consume a LOT more veggies since we met. He does stay away from red meat now (most of the time). But, I find that you are right. We can’t make people take better care of their bodies. We cannot change minds. Discovering health is something that must be owned.

Yummy looking meals!
I think the vegan/non-vegan debate comes down to respect and consciousness. You don’t have to like or agree with someone’s choices (meat-eater or otherwise) but you need to respect it. Having awareness and choice is such an amazing and powerful gift.
Lori & Michelle, you both have such a great message to share so thank you and keep up the fantastic work :)

Dani – yes it is all about respect. Thank you for your support.

So many good thoughts and comments on this. I agree not all vegans (or all people for that matter) are the same. And that it does come down to respect. Not everyone is on the same page but agree people should be more aware and support local. Anyway, enough of that from me. Your veggie dishes look great, esp the creamy one. YUM!

Its all about the sauce, right? ;)

I love that you girls don’t judge and don’t stereotype. Leading by example without preaching. That’s the best way to spread the word.

I agree. I think leading by example is the best way to go, otherwise people feel attacked and immediately get defensive. I’ve never had a vegan boyfriend, but I think it would be fun :-)

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on veganism!

I don’t think food labels are bad, per se. In fact, as I’ve written before, I think labels are neutral — they’re perfectly fine if they describe you accurately, and silly if they don’t. Whether or not you use them depends on how well they embody your choices. But since veganism isn’t the most appropriate one for you guys right now, I think it’s terrific that you’ve learned how to say that you eat almost all vegan, all the time, and simply feel great about that!

I just wanted to comment from your last post that I think that you were both RIGHT ON. Food labeling is no fun and the stress that comes with worrying about what people think is even worse. I don’t eat meat or dairy but my husband does occasionally, but since I too do all the cooking in the house he doesn’t usually eat meat or dairy at home. I think being with someone that is really supportive of lifestyle choices really helps too- we have a 100% support policy that allows us to support each other in our dietary choices and whatnot. He usually only eats meat when we go out and every once and a while have a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch at work. But he has converted to almond and soy milk and is perfectly fine with Daiya!

Love your posts. I don’t think that we should label ourselves. Labels are so limiting and we are constantly evolving and changing why put restrictions or limitations? It’s all about you and what’s in your best interest or for your highest good.

Thank you for introducing me to BodyRock! Did my first workout yesterday and it was intensely amazing. Starting to feel a little sore today from the Hotel Room Workout but ready for another. Just what I needed to get back on track =) Thanx!!!

I am not a vegan or a vegetarian by any means, but I do think that I would get along just fine without meat. When Hubby isn’t around, I could go a whole week eating nothing but tofu, beans, veggies, and quinoa! Love it all :-) I do enjoy my meat from time to time though. We are not big red meat eaters, so I tend to splurge when we go out to a nice restaurant.

Something interesting you might enjoy: apparently, the biggest cause of global warming and greenhouse gas production is…COWS!! We would be better off if humans stopped eating methanogens than we would not driving cars :-) (super freakonomics :-) )

That is so smart!! I’ve never tried hummus with rice, or Daiya on anything other than a sandwich, pizza, or burger. I will definitely be trying that soon!

Also, thank you so much for introducing me to BodyRock TV! I love anything free :)
