Re-cap of Charlotte Gluten Free Expo

by Lori and Michelle on August 9, 2010

Hello friends,

Here is my re-cap of my bakery’s adventure at the Charlotte Gluten Free Expo this past Saturday.

First upon rising around 6am on Saturday I enjoyed a savory, slightly sweet avocado pudding.

I made this pudding the night before so it was nice and thick in the morning :) I also topped my pudding off with some cacao nibs, one of my favorite things ;)

I also made Gary (my helper for the day) a delicious chocolate smoothie

Smoothie was chocolate hemp milk, hemp protein powder, and a few dates. Simple and he loved it!

Gary and I loaded up the cars and headed to Johnston and Wales for the event.

Everyone getting all set-up before the doors open.

Here I am talking with some of the event staff. Everyone was so nice!

Here I am all ready to talk away with customers :)

There were a ton of samples and goodies :) It was so nice to be apart of this great event and be in the same room as some of the big timers. I hope my bakery will be there soon ;)

Talking with another bakery owner. It was great to speak with so many vendors, to hear their stories and how gluten free is on the rise! It is so great to see gluten free getting more and more recognition and notice! I am so happy to be apart of it :)

Finally the doors opened and the crowd came rushing in. I meet so many great local Charlotte people who were exciting to have this event in their hometown and excited  that they could eat anything there and not get sick! Gary and I did not get a chance to take pictures while the crowd was around, too busy restocking samples and talking with people!

Lunch break. I brought me a green smoothie to drink! It was amazing. I was so thirsty from talking to everyone.

My helper was getting tired. Gary is not used to standing on his feet for so many hours ;) He did great though!

The gluten free event was great!! I really enjoyed myself and had a great time. Everyone I met was so nice and helpful. I have a lot of business decisions to make so the next few days and weeks are going to be tough.

Thanks to everyone who helped put together this amazing event. I hear next year’s will be even bigger. And thanks to everyone in the Charlotte area who came out to see all of us and try our products. It great meeting you all and I look forward to seeing you all again!

Now I am still in Charlotte and plan to be here till Thursday. I am excited to hang out in Charlotte for awhile and get to really see the city. Though I do have a lot of business computer work that has to be done. Yesterday I did have some time to meet-up with the lovely Caitlin. She took me to a local Mexican restaurant where we enjoyed some afternoon cocktails.

Blood Orange Margarita

Delicious. My dad would have loved this drink.

I had a great time talking with Caitlin and she mentioned there are many great local Charlotte bloggers. I can not wait to meet everyone else. Since I am going to be spending more time here in Charlotte I think it is going to be a great fit :)

Last night’s dinner was a creamy and delicious avocado pudding

avocado, cucumber, parsley, lemon, sunflower lecithin, stevia, hemp seeds, cacao nibs

Delicious! Love it!

Gary’s dinner I made him a pasta dish.

Sprouted pasta, artichokes, onion, and pistachio pesto.

This post just makes me get tired again and hungry ;)

Time to get back to work…

Till next time,

Lori

Julie Lynn – thanks we have a long ways to go before we can be a big timer, but we believe in our products! : )

That looks like a wonderful event! Of course, you are already big-timers to the folks whom you serve – and to me, small, grass roots businesses are the true big time.

I have internet at home as of today (yay!) so can hopefully be a little more organized here – I’m wanting to track down your info about Caitlin (she did the body image stuff, right?) – I’m wanting to get involved in helping with some of that kind of stuff, to help others as I help myself.

love
Ela

Ela, yes Caitlin is the one in charge of Operation Beautiful. A great source to help empower girls to feel confident and beautiful ;) Thanks for the sweet comment!

That sounds like such a perfect fit for you guys!! Your bakery is totally going to be a big timer, I just know it. :) There is no way you can’t be with the passion and heart that you both put into it. So fun!!

I am so jealous of the expo! My town is so small…there is one guy who sells gf bread and baked goods at the farmers market, but they aren’t very good.

After seeing all these avocado puddings, I am finally putting them on my list to try soon!

“to hear their stories and how gluten free is on the rise! It is so great to see gluten free getting more and more recognition and notice! I am so happy to be apart of it”–THIS IS AWESOME!

Especially where you live. No offense to anyone who’s southern but when we lived in NC and SC if you didnt eat biscuits and gravy and fried chicken and pork ribs, you were “weird”. I wasnt strictly GF then (should have been but didnt know I needed to be) and I can only imagine how hard that would have been to explain it to ppl. It’s hard everywhere but i am blessed that CA is open to more alternative dietary paths and such.

Bless you girls for blazing trails down there!

The Caitlin meetup looks great and the drink does look fabulous :)

Averie – yes it is hard here to being it so different, but things are changing. ; ) More people are becoming aware.

Oooooo – so fun! I LOVE expos!

I had a business for 8 years and was a vendor, and my husband could never stand on his feet for the 12 hour shifts, either, lol!

I have lechithin coming in a week and a half and am sooo gonna try your avocado pudding first off! :)

So happy to hear the expo went so well. Your table looks great! And even though I don’t have issues with gluten, I am glad to see that GF options are on the rise and that you’re a big part of that in your area. WTG!!! That margarita sure looks good! ;)
