Where to buy things

by Lori and Michelle on March 29, 2011

We have received a few requests about where we get our ingredients.

We do a lot of online shopping because we buy in bulk. There are two of us and we eat a lot :)

We have shared our tips before on brands we buy , but we wanted to share a more updated list.

Companies are always running deals, so we do recommend signing up for their newsletters (facebook, twitter…remember to follow TwinCakes for deals :)   ) because it can get exhausting (and very time consuming) to research all online suppliers for the best price. Some places offer free shipping like chiaseedsdirect !

iherb and vitacost offer great savings on many products from hemp seeds to brown rice protein powder.

Our favorite online place to shop is Amazon, not just for food items, but for many things!

For speciality items we love the Raw Food World (extra bonus to get some Twin Cakes things) and Natural Zing. Both offer ingredients like irish moss and some of our other favorite seaweeds.

If looking for bulk of grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and legumes, plus more great things SunOrganic Farm offers bulk pricing.

Spices and herbs in bulk we buy from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Oher great online stores we shop from are bluemountainorganics and ulitmatesuperfoods, they both have really good quality stuff!

To be honest, we buy from all places listed above. We do not have a true favorite. We support all of them because sometimes it is easier to buy everything from one place, even if it might be more expensive. It just depends what ingredient we are low in and how fast we need it.  And we do sometimes shop in the bulk bins at our local health food stores in our area.

Here is a quick example of different product prices, we chose hemp seeds to compare:

  • iherb – 5lb bag $67.78
  • ultimate superfoods – 5lb bag $83.75
  • sunorganic farm – 3lb bag $44.85
  • naturalzing – 5lb bag $54.99  or 2.5lb bag $30
  • raw food world – 5lb bag $54.95  or 3lb bag $33.10
  • vitacost – 3lb $32.99
  • amazon – 3lb bag $32.99

So???

Guess you have to pick your battles, quality over quantity? shipping costs? or just buy what you need at your local health food store.

Twins Question: Where do you buy online? Do you buy in bulk? Did we miss anywhere? And tips for online shopping?

I need to be better about this. We have a natural food store here that is about 20 minutes away and they have great prices, but not always the best deal. I do the price juggle when I shop for regular things, but I need to be better about shopping around on line for things that aren’t at the grocery store and gluten free flours. Thanks for the links!

Sarena – your welcome, yes gluten-free products are another area that requires researching around for the best deals. It can be hard.

Mountain Rose Herbs is also a great place to get organic masks, face wash, and body wash. If you haven’t tried them yet, you really should!

I never online shop! I think it’s bc I’m afraid once I start, I won’t be able to stop and money will just start flying out of my wallet… Probably bc the transaction doesn’t seem ‘as real’ ya know? But I’d probably save a ton

Good point Rebecca, but we find us spending way to much at the local stores, so overall online has been better for us.

Thanks for the references: it’s hardest on the wallet to eat healthy, so these tips are great for a poor college gal like me!

We can’t buy in bulk for most things, and can’t get much sent here (Thailand) due to customs laws or that the import charges and shipping would be very high. So, we are forced to buy in smaller batches than I would like, and hand-carry it it. I use Amazon and The Raw Food World, plus Sirova.com. When we go to the UK, I often buy from Fresh Network (www.fresh-network.com) just because it is easy to do so and the items come very quickly.

All I buy online is Sun Warrior and the occasional gourmet product. I can get pretty much everything in NY, though it does get expensive! And I definitely buy in bulk if you count Costco :)

Yes Gabriela Costco counts :)

I haven’t ordered from them yet, but you might want to check out http://www.nutsonline.com/
The prices seems pretty low, and it seems that the service is really good based on customer reviews. I might buy some nuts and more chia seeds when I run out.

I second JoJo. I’ve ordered from them twice, about to order for my third time. Each time I order, my order gets larger and larger. They have a CERTIFIED gluten free section, they also vet their suppliers. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have found them! Their mesquite powder is organic, kosher and certified gluten free. It sells for 9.99 a lb and can be bought in bulk for less. I haven’t tried it as of yet…see now my order will be larger still :) (Sorry mentioned the mesquite -because linked here from another post)
