trying something new

by Lori and Michelle on April 11, 2011

Hello friends,

How was everyone’s weekend? It was a lovely weekend for the both of us.

Over the weekend I grabbed some local eggs from the farmers market and yesterday Michelle and I wanted to try something new. We have never really had raw eggs yolks before and have heard from other friends how beneficial they can be. Remember you need high quality eggs when eating them in the raw form so make sure you know where they are coming from!

Here is what we did:

Savory Raw Egg Yolk Green Smoothie

  • 1 avocado
  • 2-3 cups water (depending on how thick you want it)
  • 1-2 raw egg yolks (organic free range, and/or local)
  • 4-6 stalks kale
  • 1 skinned cucumber
  • 1/4 tsp green stevia powder
  • lemon juice
  • fresh ginger
  • 1 tbsp sunflower lecithin
  • 1 tsp spirulina (optional)

Place all ingredients into a blender and blend till smooth.

We decided to make our typical savory green smoothie but try the addition of a raw egg yolk and see how we do.  I must admit Michelle and I were a little nervous about doing this but we were just curious to see what happens with our energy levels etc.

Verdict?

Smoothie was good.

Though Michelle and I really did not see a huge difference in how we felt from eating the raw egg yolk in our smoothie. We feel we need to have it a few times before we really notice the benefits. We plan on trying this raw egg smoothie from time to time.

Plus we got some L-Glutamine powder to take daily to rebuild our stomach lining in hopes that our bodies will start recognizing nutrients again. Since we are starting to realize that might be one of our main issues – our body is just not absorbing nutrients like it is supposed to!

*And we remember we do not claim to be vegans; we are not 100% of anything so we disregard putting any labels on ourselves even though we eat a majority of a vegan diet. We can not call ourselves one; we are just individuals who strive to feel our very best by eating a high raw plant based diet with the mix of traditional cooked food and with the occasional eggs and fish.

Enough about food and diet (we will share more about our diet and candida later on). Moving onto our workouts lately.

We took the weekend off besides going for walks and Michelle helping a friend move.

The end of last week we did get in some really good workouts!  One workout we just took our Gymboss Interval Timer and created a cardio jump rope interval routine with walking push-ups. It was a killer! I really enjoyed doing a mix of jump roping with some strength training. When we do another workout like this I will share what we did in terms of the intervals segments.

Another day Michelle and I  re-visited a bodyrock tv workout that we loved called “let’s burn some fat” a 12 minute workout.  Again we set our Gymboss Interval Timer for 24 rounds and 10/20 second intervals and let the sweating begin. This workout is great for full body and legs.

Twins Question: What is the last thing you ate or drank that was new to you? Would you ever try raw egg yolks?

Well I am off to go take the car in for some work.

Do you like taking your car into the shop? Do you like doing miscellaneous errands like that?

Till next time,

Lori

I had escargot sushi last night, which was a combination that was new to me. It was just okay. I try raw egg yolks all the time in raw cookie dough. ;) I have to ask – why are raw egg yolks more nutritious than cooked egg yolks? I’ve never really known the benefits of one versus the other.

My dad owns a automotive repair shop so I have been incredibly spoiled over the years. He’ll take my car anytime and refuses to let me pay for anything including new tires. I imagine that if I had to pay I would absolutely dread taking it to get worked on.

Kelly years ago we had escargot I was a fan I like it though it really does not have much flavor ;) Oh yes I have had my fair share of raw cookie dough too haha
Now answering your question about benefits of raw egg yolk is that when you cook the egg yolk the egg protein changes its chemical shape. Raw eggs are easy to digest provide a wonderful boost to the immune system; a balanced nutrition package. The raw egg yolks are also a great source of B vitamins; excellent source of DHA which is essential for the brain (remember this is just the egg yolk not the whites)! We have many fellow friends swear by the changes in their energy levels etc when they started having true raw egg yolks. So we are just giving it a try to see if we notice any thing. It is an experiment we are wanting to try to see if it can help with our health issues.

I think the last time I tried something new was Ethiopian cuisine. We used the injera to pick up the food, so it was like edible utensils. Fun! I also loved the flavors with all the spices.

I sometimes eat raw egg yolk in my noodle soups. I like to crack an egg off the heat. The white cooks a little bit, but the yolk pretty much stays raw.

i have runny eggs after cooking the white, but never have eaten it purely raw. i don’t think i would mind it though, we have chickens so i love eating the yolk! but my dad (who grew up in Poland on a farm) would say how he would eat raw yolks all the time. they were poor and lived off the land, and they would eat it for the nutritional benefits.

Felicia that is awesome about your dad… I bet nothing beats eating really fresh eggs of our own farm!

Ilana April 11, 2011 at 6:48 am

never tried raw egg…but I don’t eat eggs right now so I won’t be trying it soon ;) I’ve recently tried incorporating goat dairy products into my diet and I found fabulous local raw goat cheese at our farmers market – I’m eating the goat cheddar right now, yum. New to me! Never tried raw goat cheddar!
Looking forward to next week ladies!!

Ilana we are too! And we used to eat goat products but stopped because we felt we were still having ‘acne’ issues with goat products still but maybe one day we will try raw goat dairy products :)

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather April 11, 2011 at 7:27 am

You two are brave! I’d be nervous to eat raw egg. At least intentionally :)

Waiting around for the car to get fixed usually isn’t my favorite thing unless I can just leave it and go for a run. Then I love it!

Thanks Heather…we were nervous but survived haha

Funny you should mention this– I was totally thinking of adding a raw egg yolk to my green juice!! I haven’t gotten brave enough to try it yet, but maybe I will when I’m back from my business trip. I love the idea of eating a non-damaged protein, by not cooking the egg. (but the texture still kinda freaks me out, so smoothie or juice-form sounds best!)

Look forward to hearing how it goes for you!

Yes Megan it took us awhile to get brave enough to try it. I think you should try it we are hopeful that we will reap the benefits soon from it!

I tried Daiya recently. Maybe I just got the wrong kind but…blech. Ha. I get so excited to try new things and then when it’s a fail, it makes me less enthusiastic! ;)

Katie sorry to hear that you did not like Daiya cheese we seem to like it.

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine April 11, 2011 at 9:05 am

Eggs REALLY gross me out raw, so I don’t think I could ever use then in a smoothie!! I really love that you ladies don’t label yourselves, though. I feel the same way about my diet- I’m mostly vegan and think that it’s incredibly beneficial to my body, but I don’t think that means that other foods can’t be both beneficial and delicious!

lindsay April 11, 2011 at 11:26 am

i think its great to try to new foods. I have heard of raw egg yolks. Maybe they are just higher in certain good fats? Either way, the smoothie looks and sounds great!

Ela April 11, 2011 at 11:53 am

I’m glad that you tried this! When I was doing eggs, I did whole ones in my smoothies. A couple things that I noticed they went especially well with were lots of ginger (I did that especially at the beginning, to mask the taste a bit) and also vanilla.

I take glutamine too, and usually put a bit of powder in my smoothies.
I was really in a low place when I started the eggs, so I didn’t notice an immediate effect, but after a month or two there were some obvious and really positive differences. I hope the same happens for you.
love
Ela

I had pork belly in Ottawa on Friday night for the first time, and I actually loved it! I don’t eat a lot of meat but I love trying different kinds when I do. Wild boar and bison are my favourite :)

Pure2 April 11, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Gillian never head of pork belly I am glad you are with us in loving to try new things :) Isn’t that what life is about! Michelle had some wild boar a long time ago when we were studying abroad in Italy she really like it!

Hayley April 11, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Oh wow, that would make me nervous too. Undercooked egg yolk always makes me queasy, I can’t even eat the runny yolks that everyone seems to love because I get super nauseous. I’m not sure why! It’s interesting to read all the benefits of raw over cooked though. I hope it helps you girls!

Pure2 April 11, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Hayley yes it took us some time mentally to get over the raw egg yolk appeal but we really just try not to think about it. Try not to think that there is an raw egg in the smoothie ;) Mind over matter right haha

(what runs) Lori April 11, 2011 at 2:54 pm

I can honestly say that raw egg yokes are something I have not tried…. YET. Sounds good though! As long as they’re organic/veg fed/etc… you know where they’re coming from. ;)

So, you have an affiliate gymboss page?! I’m wanting to order one so I know where I’ll be purchasing mine from!
