Our thoughts on The Beauty Detox Solution Book by Kimberly Snyder

by Lori and Michelle on June 1, 2011

Hello friends,

Thanks for all the amazing comments about our first raw donut holes. We know many of you do not know where or how to make irish moss paste and we plan on sharing a video of that soon!

Today we finally had time to share our thoughts about Kimberly’s new book called The Beauty Detox Solution.

We really enjoyed reading her book on our road trip (sorry it has been awhile to share our thoughts on the book).

Most of the things Kim discussed in her book we were already aware of through our own health journey and research. We felt Kim explained things in a clear and easy way for any one from any lifestyle to relate to. She never pushed any views, just stated facts.

We agree with a lot of what she said.  We like how she approached her health plan. Kim provides a road map and you can choose what path to take. It is not a race and not a competition. She focused on looking at health as a lifestyle program not a short-term fad diet, which we agree.

One topic Kim discussed was about eating meat.  Now we are not telling anyone to eat or not eat meat. If you want to eat meat, then do. If you like meat, then like it. No one is judging here. As Kim says you can still gain benefits from eating a more natural plant based diet. The idea is to start eating more veggies and leafy greens!!!

We believe everyone could benefit from reducing their intake of processed, animal products, increase intake of vegetables and do not get to carried away with superfoods (which we have done before) or special diets. Just enjoy pure wholesome food. Support local and organic if you can. Raw foods are just bonus ;)

Kim discussed her personal journey, which was very inspiring. And we could relate with a lot of it. She traveled all over the world and she discovered each country had their own secrets to health and beauty.

Another great topic that Kim talked about in her book was skin! About how to get that beautiful skin we all dream about. That is one thing we still struggle with…getting that beautiful glowing skin. We still suffer from breakouts mainly due to stress and hormones.

“My skin held all the answers, and all I had to do was pay attention to what it was telling me.” Kimberly Synder

Love this statement because it is so true yet it for us it can be difficult to pin point what are skin is telling us. We are firm believers in that our bodies give us ‘signs’ that something is wrong. We still are not perfect at really reading and knowing what is going on. We usually can get a general idea of what might be causing our breakouts but our body keeps us guessing. Once we feel we have fixed or got a good handle on the issue something else happens and we start the process all over again!

Skin is an amazing thing. We plan to share more on our issues with skin again soon. A topic we can talk for hours about. Anything you would like us to address about skin please let us know!

“Calories and grams of carbs and proteins alone do not give a holistic picture of how healthy a food is within the human body, how nutrient-dense it is or how much fiber is has.” Kimberly Synder

This statement really made us think! We are not people anymore that really count the grams and fat in food. That is what caused our eating disorder so we DO NOT DO THIS ANYMORE!

We feel food is more than just the numbers! It is how you feel when you eat it and how your body is using that food. We noticed for us that knowing how much protein is in something did us no good, it was more beneficial for us to know that our body was absorbing all the nutrition it could from the food.  It has been a long journey for us to get over the number counting but one that is worth it in the end! We do not care anymore if something has 10 grams of fat in it especially because those 10 grams of fat are coming from the ‘good’ fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, etc. Remember it all depends where these numbers are coming from that counts in our opinion.  But again we know everyone is different so find what you are comfortable with and be happy!

Kim did a great job in going over absorbing nutrients in her book, which is an area we are trying to make sure our bodies are doing!

“We must respect how incredibly powerful our bodies are. Our body has the ability to heal itself, and it will achieve its highest potential if we clear the way for it to do so….. Each and every one of us has this potential for natural healing and beauty within us.” Kimberly Synder

Reading Kim’s Beauty Detox Solution really made us think again about food and how our mind and body have a connection. We have a challenge in front of us that Kim mentioned about not listening to all the noise out there and find out what works for us and to stick with it.

There are so many things we can keep discussing here but we won’t. We will have to discuss more of our thoughts on things at later times. We won’t bore you with an extremely long post.

Our final thoughts:

We feel Kim’s book is worth reading! She brings up a lot of great points and things that really made us think about many things!  She did a great job with laying everything out there and giving a great plan of attack to get your health back to balance!

More key topics we plan to discuss from Kim’s book are:

  • Skin and acne
  • Colon therapy
  • Food combining
  • Supplements
  • Vegetarian is not always the perfect health route
  • Balance of exercise and eating

Twins Question: Have you read Kimberly’s Book? Your thoughts? If you have not… would you? Do you like reading books about health and nutrition? Any other great books that you recommend? Any more areas or questions you have for us to address?

till next time,

xoxo

You two are just beautiful, inside and out. I agree that my skin (and other body signals) tell me loud and clear when something is wrong. But I’m still learning how to discern precisely what that is, and which changes to make. I know that gluten (obviously) jacks me up all over, but lately when I break out I can’t figure out what the trigger is.

Can’t wait to read your post on Irish moss paste! :) Have a great Wednesday, Twinnies! xoxo

Hi! I’m a new reader. I got interested in raw foods when my boyfriend gave up bread, rice, and other excess carbohydrates (fruit and dried fruit is still fine). I follow along with this on the weekdays and have started eating more raw meals and snacks as a result.

Looking forward to seeing the Irish moss post.

I love this book and Kim recipies, however I have sometimes found difficult time with her plan. I run in the morning and she suggest green smoothie or green juice until noon. I am trying this, I am not hungry I feel ok, but I can not run as much as before when I had protein shake( sun warrior or navitas). I do not know if it is only parts of detox but I will see. I will keep going and wait if my running improved to normal( now I can even run half of what I used to.)

I love your sharing on these kinds of topics. I haven’t read that book, but I love reading books on nutrition/diet. They’re always fascinating to me and even if I don’t agree with everything I see, I always learn something new.

That is such a wonderful approach to skin health, and all other kinds of health too. I totally agree with you that our bodies can give confusing signals at times, especially with all kinds of stress, but it’s a wonderful journey to try to learn better.

thanks for the review – I’m going to add this book to my list, seems VERY interesting. We had a whole section of esthetics school that talked about nutrition in relation to skin care… I definitely believe that old saying “we are what we eat” and that it has an impact on how we feel and how our body functions, that includes skin.

That looks like a great book and I’d love to read it! What you mentioned about our body giving us signs- it’s so true. I never realized how much the food I was eating was affecting me, and I wasn’t even eating “unhealthy.” I learned that “normal” eggs make me break out, probably because of the imbalance in omegas. Gluten wreaks havoc on my stomach AND my skin, energy, etc.

I LOVE reading about health and nutrition and also love reading people’s opinions on these books. I’m really interested in skin as well and how my nutrition might affect my skin. I’ve never really struggled with acne on my face (except for a brief and bizarre stint last year), but have always had little rashes and breakouts on my body. My doctor says it’s just from horomones but it’s really frustrating to me that I can’t do anything to control it. I often wonder if there is something I can do.

Awwww I love this post! I hate to admit it but being 30 with breakouts is VERY hard. I just started an ayurvedic diet to help clear the skin up because being high raw was not doing it for me (you think it would right?!) I would love to hear more on the skin topic :)

You two inspire me, keep the glowing energy up my friends!

Much love!

That sounds like a really great book, I might have to check it out. I love reading health and nutrition books, and with my background in the beauty industry, I am also very interested in beauty and skincare.

It’s true that our outer skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside the body, and that what we eat very much affects our skin. However what we put on our skin is also very important. I have been using natural oils on my skin for about 2 years now, and what a difference it makes. I have never really suffered with bad breakouts, but my skin tone was uneven and I had a lot of blocked pores. Now that I use coconut oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, and others (although not all at the same time!), my skin is soft, supple, and clear. I get compliments on my skin all the time and I don’t use anything fancy at all. In fact, I barely even wash my face since I don’t wear often wear makeup, and that has helped too. I think many women have a tendency to over cleanse the face and strip away natural oils, which can have a rebound effect on the skin. I realize that putting natural oil on oily skin seems strange, but the right oil on the right skin can make a huge improvement.

Also, since the skin is an organ of detoxification, it can get overwhelmed or backed up if it becomes the only avenue of detoxification; in other words, if you’re constipated your skin will show it. Cleansing foods are all great and fine except if you’re not excreting the toxins well, they can come out strongly through the skin instead of other organs. I have had this experience before when I was on a cleanse or was eating really clean, but my digestion was not 100%.

Anyway, just wanted to share that info in case you were curious about it. Eliminating regular skin/face products from my routine was one of the best beauty decisions I’ve made!

p.s. some natural oils are photosensitive and should be used with caution in sunlight – use those ones for night time.

Thank you so much for sharing, we have always loved coconut oil and just started jojoba oil.

This is all so interesting to me. I would love to hear more about how eating affects our skin. I have been going back and forth with great skin for a couple of months, followed by a series of breakouts (mainly on my chin) and it is driving me nuts! I know it’s definitely hormone related, but I wonder if there is any way to control it?

Pure2 June 2, 2011 at 11:13 am

Same here Katherine, hormone breakouts are what we suffer from the most. Hope to share our thoughts soon.

Thank you so much for writing this post girls! It was really great written, and im so happy you look deaper than calories and fat grams (although I did knew you do already :) ). I get so frustrated when people obsess with protein grams and low cars or what ever. i work in the reception at a gym. I love love my job, but I daily hear people talk about food in the weiredst way. Most of the people I meet, sees protein shakes and energy bars as healthy foods! I just want tro cry.. almost :P Of course, people have the right to chose whatever they like to eat themself. But I wish they started to see food in a more “whole” way!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts- you are smart ladies ;)

I enjoyed Kimberly’s book – I do like reading for a wider perspective – but what you said about shutting out all the “noise” and doing what works for you individually is the most important lesson i think! You ladies are the smartest :) Looking forward to those upcoming posts!

It sounds like a great read! I’ll probably check it out. And it’s so true that we need to learn to listen to our bodies. I’m pretty new at it and it could be kinda challenging learning what all the signs your own body’s giving to you mean. Also, food has so much to do with skin. I just don’t understand why dermatologists keep arguing otherwise. Anyways, I’d love to hear more from you on these topics :]

Lisa June 4, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Great review. I really liked the book too, even though I didn’t really learn anything new. The thing I did investigate was the Magnesium Oxygen supplements…and after doing more research I think they’ll be really helpful for candida (the O2 byproduct feeds good bacteria in the digestive tract and kills bad bacteria). I also liked how she makes cultured veggies with miso—I’ve used the Body Ecology starters in the past, but miso is easier to get at the grocery store.

Skin is an issue for me too, and it’s pretty frustrating sometimes. I like Kim’s perspectives, and I also just read an article by Dr. Mercola called “the root cause of acne your doctor will never tell you about” and that has some good insights about the relationship between food and skin too.

Have a great weekend!
