hey hey friends!
Happy Friday! Any fun plans for this weekend? yesterday I asked on facebook what everyone was doing and a few of you informed me of your plans. I wanted to wish our dear friend Liz good luck in her dance competition. And another dear friend Kristin hope you have a blast at the wedding. For me, while Michelle travels back this way from being in Nashville this weekend I am actually going to the beach with some of my girlfriends. It is a little tradition that they do because all the ‘guys’ go and play golf all weekend. so us girls just had to do something as well haha
moving onto today’s recipe.
let me just say when Michelle and I enjoyed this breakfast earlier this week it was pure bliss.
it has been ages since we have had chocolate milk. of course it is not the chocolate milk you may be thinking. if you have been following our blog since the beginning you remember that we cut out dairy from our diet a VERY long time ago. and we are sure glad we did.
nowadays there are so many non-dairy alternatives it is crazy. like Gena we enjoying making our own nut or seed based milks at home. they are super easy to make and you can add whatever sweetener you like and flavorings!
and that is exactly what we did. though since being on this elimination diet we have to watch what sweeteners we use.
this non-dairy milk is based out of our favorite ingredient hemp seeds along with a little mesquite and carob for smoky chocolate flavor. Michelle and I made this hemp milk a little different too. we did not strain out the pulp like you would normally when making a nut milk. we wanted a little texture to the milk. again please feel free to strain yours.
now you could use cocoa powder instead of carob, again we took out cocoa for a little bit in this elimination diet.
this recipe is great for those who can not handle dairy and chocolate but still want the idea of having chocolate milk. it worked for us.
Pure2raw recipe: homemade hemp carob milk
prep- time: 5 minutes
make-time: 5 minutes
tools needed: blender
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup hemp seeds
- 2 tbsp carob powder (or cocoa)
- 1 tbsp mesquite powder (could use maca, lucuma or more cocoa for a rich chocolate flavor)
- splash of vanilla (our is alcohol free from singing dog vanilla)
Directions:
Place all ingredients into your blender and blend till hemp seeds are well blended.
Once everything is mixed together nicely pour into a glass container. *again you may strain your milk for any pulp but we did not do this part.
to make the cereal:
add in 1/2 cup soaked and rinsed buckwheat groats and place in a bowl.
pour your hemp carob milk over the buckwheat and enjoy.
*if you do not have raw buckwheat groats you may use this milk on top of any cereal or oats of your liking. you may also add in a sweetener if you like.
breakfast is served!
I have been loving carob with a little mesquite mixed together to give me that chocolate-like satisfaction. if you have not had mesquite before you should try it. we love the Navitas Naturals brand. it provides a tad of sweetness along with a smoky caramel like flavor. plus mesquite is full of fiber and protein.
enjoy!
now who wants some breakfast?
Twins Question: Have you ever tried mesquite before? If so did you like it? Are you a buckwheat fan? Have you ever made your own chocolate non-dairy milk before?
Anyone else have plans this weekend?
till next time,
xoxo

My mom used to have to get chocolate milk for me because it was all I would drink. I was a picky little kid!

We are huuuuge buckwheat fans! I’ve recently discovered cooked buckwheat in the morning with bananas. But I’m definetely am going to try this considering I just bought a new bag of carob and hemp seeds.

hey girls! i am definately going to give this milk a try
i love that we still have the things we “cannot have”! That does not make sense…but it does
One question…there is no header for all your recipes. I cannot find an index of your recipes! Did you get rid of it!?
Sophie at the moment we did as we are working on updating our recipe page, it was really out dated and we are trying to make it user friendly it should be back up soon. For now you will have to click on our side bar widgets that say baking, food, or raw foods to get our recipes. Sorry about all this!
I want some! Dang that looks good! I haven’t tried mesquite, but I definitely need to! Have a great weekend! Sounds like you two have some fun stuff planned!

Lori,
So all you do is soak the raw groats before mixing with the hemp milk? for how long?
Claire I soaked by groats for about 4 hours I would say, then I just rinsed well and ate with the hemp milk cereal! hope that helps
That milk sounds so delicious and so does that “cereal”! Yum! I want a bowl!

Ooh this looks so good! I’ve never tried mesquite, but I’m a huge fan of raw buckwheat cereal. And I’ve never taken the time to make my own nut milks, but it looks so easy – I may just have to start, I’d love carob flavored milk

I don’t like cow’s milk, so this hemp milk alternative sounds awesome! I normally use almond or soy, so I’ve never tried hemp, but I’ll have to give it a taste!

Sounds awesome! Since I found out I may be lactose intolerant…I’m always looking for dairy alternatives. This looks great. This weekend= dinner with friends, football, getting my hair done!!, gym and time with the babe, husband and puppers!

I’ll have to try mesquite and carob together–chocolate, though I love it, just does not make me feel good and I need to steer clear. Interesting–carob and mesquite are from closely related trees–I love the idea of them together.
Buckwheat doesn’t seem to like my tummy (some people with celiac can’t have it)–but I seem to be ok with amaranth, millet and even gf oats!
Have a lovely time at the beach.

I have been putting off making my own non-dairy milk at home but I think this might be the one I finally try! I’m intrigued by the mesquite and haven’t used it before. I have had raw buckwheat granola but I wan’t actually too crazy about the flavor. I’m not sure if it was the buckwheat or some other ingredient but I want to try again since it seems like a good alternative to grains.

This looks phenomenal! I want in
This looks SO GOOD! And sugar-free! Merci beaucoup! Can’t seem to find mesquite in Paris, but will try with just the carob and hemp seeds (which I also have to import from the US here, sacre bleu!
How long do you soak the buckwheat? And is this for just one serving or two ? Keep the recipes coming, you two are so inspiring! I can’t wait to read Diet Wise, thanks so much for the tip. Gros bisous from France!
Rebecca recently posted..You say tomato, I say…Premiere Pression Provence!
Rebecca we soaked the buckwheat for a few hours, you could even soak them over night and rinse in the morning. And for us this is one serving, but you could get two out of it.
It’s like you ladies read my mind! Though I wasn’t thinking about a cool beverage … I have mesquite powder on hand and love carob and was thinking about a hot chocolate – malted carob style with the mesquite! Love this idea too though, and have been experimenting with cereal mylks.

I made a version of this for breakfast and really liked it! Instead of Mesquite and cocoa, I just used vanilla powder and I did throw in 3 drops of alcohol free stevia. I poured it over sprouted dried buckwheat, what a delicious and filling breakfast! I would like to try mesquite someday soon
I haven’t because I was told it was too high on the glycemic index for my diet… but as I just learned after reading the nutritional info for buckwheat, it’s pretty carby too.. so we’ll see what the body says. Taste buds say – Yummy!
wow this breakfast looks totally perfect! I can’t wait to try that milk. I’ve never tried buckwheat before…is it really crunchy or does it soften with the milk?
Kelsey recently posted..The Swing of Things
Kelsey it will depend how long you let it sit in the milk.
and they are easy to digest this way?!
yes Claire from them being soaked makes it easier on the stomach.
