hello friends,
thank you so much for all the sweet comments about me finding my wedding dress the other day! I am so thrilled and excited for the next few months of planning everything for my big day. and then to share it with you all!
Michelle has mentioned before about diet wise and how we are loving the book. we have read so many health, diet, and nutrition books and each one brings a new light to the subject. though you really have to apply each book or article you read to your own life and where you are in your current health journey. we are all different and need different things. Michelle and I are curious what health and diet findings we will learn these next few days/weeks.
we finished the book on the plane the other day and now are starting to do some of the suggestions in the book this week.
today is day one of our diet wise plan.
the main objective of the Diet Wise book is to get you to re-think about the foods you really eat on a daily basis. it made us think about a ‘good for you’ food actually may not be so healthy for us as individuals. this has been an eye opening concept that we are still trying to wrap our heads around. how could a healthy food be harming us?
this book dealt with a lot of food allergies and intolerances. which we know we suffer from some.
one of the main reasons why we got this book was because after doing our own elimination diet many years ago we realized we were sensitive to some of the main food allergies like wheat, gluten, peanuts and dairy. then we fell into being raw vegans for a few years (we still eat a high raw diet but now we have egg and fish from time to time). then we did a Candida cleanse for a while.
all these things helped but lately we still suffer from symptoms which made us think maybe we have a hidden food intolerance like the book mentioned. this book also did a great job in describing how one minute you can feel great eating something then down the road it makes you sick.
we came across the Diet Wise book and felt like it was meant to be. like we needed to read this book to give us hope again that we can feel normal again, that we can cure ourselves from whatever we are experiencing.
we think we may have some hidden food intolerances that we might not realize. so we are taking matters into our own hands and trying to figure this all out!
these past few weeks Michelle and I have noticed more breakouts and skin issues. we know our hormones, thyroid and stress are an issue, but this book helped us realize maybe it is something that we are still eating that is causing these breakouts.
our face breakouts are not the only thing that have us re-thinking everything again. we still suffer from:
- foggy head
- headaches from time to time
- tiredness
- depression/lack of will power some days
- bloating/gas
- constipation again
- just feel like blah
our plan: we are following what the diet wise book has to say about how to do an elimination diet. we made a list of foods we think might be giving us issues, made a list of foods we eat everyday, and a list of foods we eat from time to time.
we are taking many foods out of our diet and eating a real simple clean diet for about 7-10 days before we reintroduce some foods back.
we will share most of our journey of this food elimination plan in hopes that we can share our experience to help someone else. to see if we can really find out if some foods are still giving us issues.
morning breakfast was some dandy tea and watermelon
we are eager to try this diet wise plan out to see if we are really sensitive to foods we commonly eat. and to see if we can fix our health issues to get us back to our happy go-getter selves!
we will continue to share more of our thoughts on this book! it really has so many interesting topics.
Twins Question: Do you like reading health/diet/nutrition books and/or articles? Is there any health book out there that really made a huge difference in your health? What are your thoughts at hidden food intolerances? Do you feel healthy foods can be harmful for certain individuals?
till next time,
xoxo
Lori

It’s so interesting, I’ve been following for a while and I have gone through similar diet paths. I just recently did a candida cleanse and have sense realized what wheat and gluten were doing to me and have stayed clear of it with a few slip ups (it’s in everything!) I am looking forward to reading about your progress with this.. maybe it will shed some more light on what has been going on with me. I was vegan for 4 years and raw for about a year of that- which my body hated. I began incorporating eggs and dairy along with more fat into my diet and my body seems to be liking that transition.
I have only just started reading health and nutrition books – I never knew how much I would love them!
I have mixed feelings on hidden food intolerances, mainly coming from my family. My parents have relatives who claim to have tons of allergies and intolerances, but my parents think that there is no sound evidence that this is true, and that people who say they have food intolerances just think the world is out to get them.
Lately, since I have been more in touch with what I put in my body, am leaning to believe that what we eat has a MUCH greater effect on how we feel, look, act, etc. I would love to do a food intolerance test or elimination diet, but part of me is afraid of that judgement. Until then, I plan to try to be as in-tune as possible, and avoid foods that seem to make me feel less-than-great.
I definitely will be following with interest to see what you discover. Have the same issues and find the greatest frustration is eating a food one week and think that all is ok, to suddenly having a bad day when nothing obvious seems to have changed but my system is crying out “NO what have you done to me”. Especially so when all my friends tell me that my diet is so “good” and virtuous. My diet is so clean, so there must be underlying intolerances to so-called healthy foods. I hope you have success, I await your next posts to see what you discover.
mandy we hope to discover some issues that hopefully will be able to help you too!! we will all figure it out soon!!
this sounds like a great book. Your body will tell you, thats for sure. KEep us posted!!
Great post! Pat and I went and saw a Naturopath when we were home in Australia as Pat has bad sinus problems and has ever since I’ve known him. He did a live blood analysis for us both and found a few things that are not working as well as they should. He also subscribes to the blood type diet (we are both O types which means more meat in our diets!) but the Naturopath also suggested we listen to our bodies reactions to certain things, which really sounds like what this book is talking about.
I’d be interested to know if you both suffer the same ailments/symptoms at the same times (ie breakouts etc).
Gosh wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to eat and not have to think about it all the time. It is such hardwork sometimes!
Robyn I know it will be interesting to see what similar foods cause similar reactions for us, will we be the same or different?
and we tried the blood type diet we are A’s ! we still think of it from time to time.
I’m an O type too Robyn and feel awful with meat protein (although I haven’t tried it again for ages). I also have a very severe intolerance to eggs and cacao makes me feel so wired and irritable!
Ladies, I see with my clients all the time that some healthy foods acn cause issues while the body is out of balance. Generally once the body balances (which requires removing those foods for s while), the healthy foods can be added back in.
Look forward to reading your progress!
Looks interesting! Please keep us posted on your progress. I’ve been on a cleanse, trying to feel better. Do they address coffee in the book? I know you girls are big coffee fans like me
Nikki, yes the address coffee and we are taking a break from it for these 7-10 days to see what foods are effecting us. it is going to be hard because we love the taste of coffee but the dandy tea helps
Hey Lori and Michelle,
This book seems like a great read. I have been high raw/vegan for about 6 months now. I have yet to go get tested for allergies, but I feel like I need to do that, since my skin seems to breakout when I have certain foods. Anyway, just wanted to say I love your blog and all the tips and advice you guys give!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your guys blog. I wrote you guys an email a little bit ago about acne and skin issues and your tips were great
thanks Jessy!!! we still plan on doing a post more about acne and skin issues, and hopefully what we learn more here to share!
That book sounds very interesting! I hope you girls can figure out what’s making you feel so blah. That’s never a fun feeling. After realizing dairy did a number on me and by limiting it now I feel SO much better. Some days I can eat more, some days none at all.
ALL i ever read are health and fitness nutrition and cook books. I decided last year I needed more “fun” books in my life. Most of my library are not “fun” but they are fun for me
I need to pick this up. I added it to my Amazon list the other day when you first wrote about it…sounds interesting!
Hi,
I just received Dr. Wright’s newsletter where he talks about hidden allergies if you want to read it http://wrightnewsletter.com/2011/08/01/august-2011-nah-newsletter/) or http://www.WrightNewsletter.com username: aug2011, password:apple}
and gave it to my husband to read and we decided to do the elimination diet for 21 days( no wheat, no dairy, no chocolate, etc), also candida is a biggie for me, started taking oregano oil in capsules and feel so much better( no bloating, no digestive problems). Very curious about the diet wise book, will have to read it.
Paula thank you thank you thank you!! we will definitely look into that article from Dr. Wright!! thanks again!
honestly, i don’t do too much reading in women’s health mags because i disagree with a ton of their ‘tips’ i found that eliminating gluten and dairy helped heal my gut. i do still indulge in some dairy (mostly goat) from time to time but i just try not to stress about food in general. i realize that some cramping and/or symptoms is just normal as we live in a modern world FULL of external stressors! it’s inevitable to be completely perfect all the time but i try not to let stress get the best of me.
agreed Melissa, it is hard to be perfect all the time, and we know that but in general we have just not been feeling ourselves and just need to look at food a little differently.
I LOVE reading about different ways to eat. We are all made up of different things and we work with different nutrients. Tony suffers so badly from the bloating and I’m thinking he may be suffering from some candida issues. He has celiac, so I know there is damage, but he is really having a hard time with it. I hope you ladies find the answer and I can’t wait to hear more about the book!
I’m sort of addicted to health books. This one sounds great! I feel like my experience is similar to yours (with lots of symptoms in common). Recently, I cut out all grains and pseudograins and it helped so much—I’m happy about finding that out, but sad because I love the pseudograins!
I gave up dairy for a long time, and have added back in some raw dairy. I think I may need to rethink that—my skin breaks out a little here and there either way it seems. Frustrating! I’ll be interested in following your journey on this!
That book sounds really interesting. I have a sneaking suspicion that something I’m eating is causing breakouts. Sometimes I think it’s yogurt, but I honestly can’t imagine not eating yogurt!!! I went vegan for six months and I think it made me love greek yogurt even more
Aghhh I commented when you first posted this…did it go to your spam folder???
Great book rec. I am going to pick this one up. Looks right up my alley!
Lori–was that dress I asked about Maggie Sottero??? I showed Michael and told him that was my dream dress before I found “my” dress and he was like…that’s really nice
Laury, oh no we will check our spam
sorry
aww too cute about the dress, but you looked gorgeous in your “one”
Oh, I’m so excited to see where you go with this. It does seem weird, doesn’t it, that foods that should be perfectly nutritious could make us sick. But I know it’s true–apart from gluten, which tons of people can eat no problem and makes me so sick, I get sick from bell peppers!
I’m having horrible skin issues still too, and depression/anxiety which I also deal with. My ND says that my liver is just overloaded with hormone issue stuff and so is ‘behind’ on detoxing, and that elevated cortisol is part of the problem, but I keep wondering about an allergy (although I change my diet around pretty often).
I devour health books and articles–love reading about them. Unfortunately, too often they send me down a restrictive path (which is my problem, not theirs: that’s the kind of filter I have)–I wish I could find the ‘one’ that just clicks and explains everything and I feel better ever after, but maybe that’s just pie in the sky thinking.
Looking forward to you sharing your journey!
love
Ela
I really look forward to reading more about your trial with this book. I’ve written before, i have VERY similar hormone issues (amenorrhea for over a year) and hypothyroidism. I have eaten gluten free and stay away from dairy for over 2 years, however still struggle with the upset belly, bloat, exhaustion and recently, VERY dry skin and hair loss.
I may have to pick up a copy of this book to read while you’re both doing the Elimination.
PS, CONGRATS on the dress!
I love the wedding shows and can’t wait for the days to take my twin sister dress shopping!
I love finding new nutrition books and excited to find out what you girls think about this…my list of to read books is pretty high!
I have passed the Butterfly Award to you gals..check it out on the blog!! Happy Wednesday!
Your symptoms sound like candida. Try eating no sugar, no fruit or anything that turns to sugar. Wishing you health and happiness.
I was having really bad stomach cramps and couldn’t seem to link them to any particular food. My doctor ordered some blood tests and found that I had a stomach bacteria that is pretty common. It’s the leading cause of ulcers and also can cause gastritis and even stomach cancer. A course of multiple antibiotics can eradicate it. thanks Jen we will take a look at the article
I’m really keen to see what comes out of this elimination diet of yours. I’ve, like many above, got food intolerance’s of some sort and suffer from severe daily gas, bloating and cramps. I’ve been thinking of doing an elimination diet myself. So I’m very interested in how you two fair. Needless to say my partner is sick of my issues:)he’s pushing for the elimination diet for me.
I read somewhere that acne is a gut issue! It seems so true bc everytime I eat the wrong foods or have ibs flare up, I break out! I know I’m sensitive to sugar alcohols, gluten.. I’m very interested to hear your experience with this book! Thx!
I would be SO curious and so thankful to here your tips for skin issues. I feel like I have tried everything, topical and food/vitamin wise and nothing seems to help much. It’s very inconsistent so I never can tell what’s helping or causing what! It’s such an issue for me and is pretty hard on the self esteem sometimes. I am in my late 20′s and it just continues to get worse (I had NOTHING in high school, though I eat WAY healthier now) I REALLY appreciate any tips you have to offer. Thanks so much! Love your blog~
Thanks…was it a Maggie is what I wanted to know? So curious if its the same one bc it looks like it!
Laury on I am not sure of the brand, I will check though, sorry
