hello friends!
well after a few days of traveling and taking some personal time off this past weekend we are rested and ready to go.
today we wanted to share how our diet wise elimination diet is going and how we went about it.
we started this diet 14 days ago but after a fun night with friends we decided to start over the following Sunday. so now we are really on day 10.
we have gotten a few requests to go over more exactly what our plan was and what foods we took out. today we are going to share all this.
What foods did you take out first?
almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, macadamina nuts, chocolate (cacao), coconut flakes, coconut oil, coconut flour, coconut sugar, coconut butter, agave nectar, maple syrup, stevia, xylitol, quinoa, millet, lentils, chickpeas, mung beans, no citrus fruits (lemons, limes, oranges), eggs, no protein powders (vega, hemp protein, brown rice)
What foods did you eat?
fruit (apples, bananas, peaches, figs, grapes, watermelon, pineapple, berries, kiwi), all types of veggies, all winter squashes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, chia seeds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, fish (mostly tuna, salmon), lettuce, dark leafy greens, fresh herbs, kombucha, and Twin Cakes crackers and flatbreads, buckwheat, carob, mesquite, avocado, tahini (sesame seeds)
What about coffee?
well we did really well with taking coffee out for the first 7 days. on day 8 we tried some coffee again. we never really thought coffee was giving us our health issues because we never went over board with it we usually did only have one cup a day. (we are just those girls who drink coffee because we actually love the flavor, not for the caffeine part). we enjoy the social aspect of coffee and it is part of our morning routine.
we did not go over board with coffee when we added it back in. it is now something we enjoy and have from time to time. now we feel if we have it in moderation we should be fine with it.
How did we decided what foods to take out first?
in the book he discusses what foods to take out and helps you figure out what other foods could be your hidden food sensitivities. we tried to pick foods that could possibly be a culprit from us over eating it or having it too much. we had thoughts about us being sensitive to nuts and coconut before we started this and started with those main issues first. and we had already started to eat a grain free diet so we stayed doing that. plus we already knew we were sensitive to sugar.
How did you handle all the fruit again?
at first we did not really think about it that we were still consuming sugar through fruit. we decided after the 5-7 day mark we would cut back on the amount of fresh fruit we were eating.
What have you been noticing by doing this diet?
prior to our days of traveling we were feeling great by day 7-8. we gave another update on our day 8 where you can read more about our skin, stomach and energy levels.
traveling did play a role in how we are feeling today. but we are still overall feeling great. no headaches, no pain any where, but still breaking out! from traveling we both noticed how dehydrated we get so we have learned that we still really need to watch our water intake when traveling.
we do not really crave sweets anymore! which is a complete shock to us! because as many of you know we love our sweets. now this does not been we will never have sweets again, we will. but we hope this time around we will have them more in moderation and control our cravings for them better. we have been noticing that the little fruit we eat now for sugar with a healthy fat is all we need to satisfy us for hours.
from our thoughts on our Omega’s ( and hearing from readers) we are planning on experimenting with consuming Udo’s Oil blend and see how our skin does.
we had it for the first time last night over our salad
we are excited to see how our bodies do with this addition of omega oil blend to it!
What are we going to be adding back first?
today we plan on adding in back coconut oil only.
again in the book he goes over how to add the foods back in. you have to do it one at a time and eat it alone. so today we plan on having coconut oil by itself and do a pulse test to see how our bodies respond to it. we will have to give an update on that once we know our results.
we still have a lot to learn about our bodies.
once we play around with adding some of the foods we avoided first we will try to take other things out. again our main goal is to feel 110% of our best all the time (well majority of the time at least) and figure out why we are having major skin issues (breakouts).
we hope this helps others who had questions on what we are doing. if you have more please share in the comments.
Happy Monday friends!
Twins Question: Do you like coffee shops? Do you like the taste of coffee? Do you ever do things for the social aspect of it? What was one thing you did or ate all weekend that you loved or enjoyed?

I love hearing about your diet and what you are finding out about your bodies..that’s awesome you don’t crave sweets anymore! Do you think there is an aspect of the diet that is producing this result, i.e.: like eating more fruit?
I love coffee, the flavor and the social aspect..I don’t really feel it give me a caffeine high, but maybe?
I went on an awesome hike on Sunday…lovely to be in nature!!
Happy Monday! Thanks for sharing!!

Liz yes eating more fruit, getting natural sugar is helping us too not crave sweets.
I’ve read a lot about Omega supplements, and I’ve NEVER read anything bad about Udo’s. I use that too.
About coffee, I have 1 cup a day, however my first cup of coffee was at 41 years old a couple of years ago! Yep, always HATED coffee, and one day I tried it and now I love it! I am also a twin and my twin sister has a food blog too, but I think it would be fun if we had one together!
Jenn awesome! yes you and ur sis should ; )
1) your header looks to be repeating a little, fyi. (chrome browser, no funky extensions. Looks like it may be in a div or frame taller than it needs to be, with the background on repeat?)
2) Most coffee shops, I don’t like. We have ONE nearby that has a fireplace, overstuffed chairs, wood floors, and cozy/warm/welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, it closes at 4:30 and isn’t open on Sundays (I know, right?!) so I don’t get to enjoy it as often as I would like.
I like really STRONG, dark coffee. I don’t need creamer, but I do need a little sweet. Typically, my husband and I will buy two cups – one of the flavored concoction, and one unsweetened dark regular. We’ll split the sweetened drink between the regular and it’s the PERFECT amount of sweet and flavor (and sometimes even then a little on the sweet side). I don’t want to get back to the point where I think the full-fledged sweetened drink is the right amount of sugar. =]
I definitely drink for the social aspect. Sometimes for coffee, but also sometimes for alcohol. I dislike that I do it pretty much every time I do – I’d rather make the CHOICE to drink either, and I don’t like feeling socially obligated to either.
This weekend I made caramelized onion mashed potatoes (salt, pepper, onions, potatoes, and water. SO yum) and finally fixed my hair. The fixing wasn’t fun (fixing = too many box dyes in a row being replaced by professional color matched to my natural shade) but the results are spectacular. Love the fun long-in-the-front bob cut, too. I feel quirky and cute in this hair, and that means I’m smiling more and my step’s a little springier, so I AM cuter and quirkier. Funny how that works.
(That was two things, but one was a do and the other was an eat, so I cheated and am pretending it was a valid answer).
Don’t think I’ve mentioned how much I love that you add discussion questions to the end of your posts. <3

Tami thank you so much! And yes we used to split our coffees just the way you mentioned, but now we both just really like coffee plain
xoxo
Tami, just make sure your refresh the page in chrome, it takes a bit for the coding to refresh. but it should eventually.
I love some coffee—the lighter nutty ones are my fave. I like hazelnut best! I like meeting a friend in a coffee shop, and chatting and being social with a nice hot cup of coffee! I do drink coffee at home too, but not for the caffeine—it’s like warm comfort in a cup

I made choco avocado pudding this weekend for a wellness fair, and I ate some too…Mmmm!

Lori & Michelle,
I have followed your blog for quite some time now and decided *today* to finally comment. I know… crazy, right?
I am a vegan and have had breakout problems with my skin for a long time. Like you I find it frustrating since my diet is plant based and well-rounded (limited sweets, limited alcohol, high on fruits & veggies, very low on processed foods). I think it’s great that you are both looking so closely at specific parts of your diet ~ it has encouraged me to do so, too. I will definitely have to check out Diet Wise!
To answer your questions:
I absolutely LOVE coffee shops ~ either by myself to read or do computer work or with a friend. Also, I adore coffee (simple black is my fave)… for the taste and for the social & ritual aspects. I don’t drink it during the week (usually just decaf green tea) but on the weekend I like to ease into Saturday & Sunday with it. I have a problem with caffeine affecting me so I usually just have half-caf or decaf.
*Something I enjoyed from the weekend: I visited my brother and sister-in-law in Albany and had an absolute blast with them.
We relaxed, talked, watched movies, ate pumpkin waffles, did some geocaching, and all around had a great time!
Thanks for your great blog ~ I love learning about your health journey and always look forward to your posts!
Best wishes,
Emily
Emily thank you for commenting
and you are not alone with the skin and eating a clean diet. we will figure this out together.
I love your new header, I tried eliminating coffee as well but have fallen back onto it, I love the way it tastes I think I need to definitely keep it in moderation though!
It’s so great to hear the updates and see how you girls are doing with your experimentations. Breakouts are no fun. Mine are very hormone related… As in most of the month it’s not bad, then I get a week that’s really bad. No fun.
I love the flavor of coffee too, but I’m super sensitive to it so I cut it out
. I have a coffee giveaway going on you girls might like!

Heather we will check it out, we also plan to do your 100 workout!!
I’m definitely interested in how and if you can find a way to solve the acne mystery. I’ve never had a spot on my face (except the random breakout here and there) until I actually started eating raw. My best guess it’s the sugar intake that skyrocketed when I discovered fruits, but I can’t shake it! If you find something, please share!
I’ve definitely heard similar things from others I’ve known who have done elimination diets– I’m sure it’s HARD to cut sweets out, but it seems common that once you DO it, you really stop craving them in your diet. Interesting!

I have a question about workout fuel, actually about protein. Do you have energy to workout as much as before elimination diet or do you think your body is missing some kind of fuel that is used to have before and after workout.
Many thanks to you and wish good luck
we have chia seeds before we workout and it provides us energy, and the fruit afterwards seems to be helping our bodies. the first few days of the diet we did not have much energy, but now we are feeling great and have energy to workout. plus we eat a lot of hemp seeds throughout the day.
sounds really exhausting to eliminate all those things, but good information to have. i learned a lot being all raw then adding things back and realizing what didn’t work for me. it’s a good lesson if you have health and digestion issues.
Yes it is Bitt
glad you are finding some solutions for your eats! i do enjoy coffee but mostly just on weekends. it hurts my stomach if i drink it in the am at work. love the social aspect. coconut products can be hard on the tummy (fat/fiber) i went to a little italy in my neighborhood and it was lots of fun. music, games & tons of food! it’s 1 of the the rare occasions where i eat dairy (mmm gelato!)

I love coffee for the taste and the ritual. I rarely ever drink it for the caffeine boost.
I had some homemade cod baked in lemon and butter and a calamari in tomato sauce pasta made by my boyfriend’s mom which was delicious. Homemade always trumps going out.
This is such great info and it sounds like the perfect test. I feel like I do my best to eat healthy, whole, and natural..but some days my stomach will hurt, and my face is broken out! I’m definitely going to look more into this for sure!

same here Ari, we think we are eating what works for us but then something happens and it makes us rethink it all
that elimination diet sounds so challenging! i also love love love coffee just for the taste and the warmth.

Caitlin so far it has not been that bad
and oh yes the warmth of coffee is great!
So interesting! Thanks for sharing! Like you – I really enjoy the social aspect of coffee – I never drink more than 1 cup per day and it’s not something I “need” everyday – it’s just something I enjoy
Wish I could sit down to a cup with the both of you! xo

same here! i love coffee for flavor. I had to give it up for a while and it really did help with the acidity. Crazy, eh? Udi’s oil is awesome. Great on salads.

Lindsay yes we have been enjoying the new oil!! we are excited to see how it helps us!
I loved this recap. Cutting foods out of your diet can be so hard, but I love that you two documented everything and are going through it together! I do love coffee! I love the flavor more than the caffeine. It’s very comforting in the morning!
As for something great I ate this weekend…I roasted some cabbage, carrots and red peppers with turmeric and it was amazing!

I love that you experiment with foods and your bodies. My body amazes me everyday. i am currently on the GAPS diet to heal my digestive system(i have a bad one too
) i will have to get this book though if it helps you girls!
Caroline we have good things about the GAPS diet!! Good luck with it all!! HUGS
Thanks for sharing this, girls! You don’t need to share details but what made you want to do this particular elimination diet? I know there are digestive issues…I guess I don’t really know what I am asking but just curious…have you ever had any relief or has this been an ongoing issue? If so I am so sorry you have had to deal with it but so glad you are slowly figuring it out!
I love the smell and taste of coffee…but never drink it! I usually do tea if I go for coffee.
Laury @thefitnessdish recently posted..Mini Banana Nut Protein Cake
Laury one of the main reasons why we did this diet was really from after reading the book, and that we just both felt blah, more lazy then usual for us, felt like getting addicting to coffee again, face was breaking out uncontrollable again, just felt like we were eating as clean and healthy as we could but our bodies were telling us other wise. we felt like maybe something we were still eating was giving us issues even if it was healthy. we are unsure, now thinking it is other issues and that our bodies being so sensitive to food needs more of a rotational diet, can’t eat one thing for very long. we shall see, hopefully each week we learn more
well that is the goal at least
You girls are gogetters! Inspirational!
I’ve thought of trying this…but haven’t yet…certainly won’t be on my trip though. Haha, that’d be a nightmare.
Sometime I might…

Hey ladies!

Awesome job on your elimination diet. Sounds like it’s been really worthwhile so far!
Have you tried doing regular colon cleansing too? I found that to be critical for healing my skin issues. Now I very rarely have any skin problems at all.
Stress management, a super clean diet and addressing emotional stuff was also a big part of it!
Love and lots of yummy, glowing skin wishes to you both
xx
Casey recently posted..The Just Vegetables Dessert Challenge – Join Me!
Casey when we lived in Raleigh we did colonics regularly. It did not really help our skin, which is why we feel it is food related, or hormones.
That’s great that you are teaching yourselves so much about your bodies! Sounds like a really interesting process.
I sort of like the taste of coffee, but it’s always had such a bad effect on my body that I haven’t really been able to get into it.
love

Jenny no we have not raw honey in years, never was really a fan of it
