good morning friends!
we wanted to share some recent articles and blog posts that really made us think. we hope you enjoy them as well.
one green planet had a great video highlight from “The Doctors” show about vegans vs meat eaters.
this video really got to us both. we would love to hear your thoughts? even though we do not consider ourselves vegan anymore, we still think those that are vegans are healthy and fine unlike what some of the Dr’s said.
our dear friend Janetha did an amazing post and topic on some diet disasters - we shared our thoughts on the matter check out our comment there. It is something we could talk about for hours, so we will spare you all our ramblings.
we believe in real food. but not just real foods, it has to be a balance of foods! think less is more. and for us eating a low sugar diet helps even if that means using stevia from time to time. plus what we eat is not ideal for anyone else, but us!!!
a Charlotte friend of ours, the amazing Katy, linked up a great wavy hair tutorial that we plan on trying on our own hair. We are horrible at doing our hair since most of the time we have our hair pulled back.
doesn’t she have beautiful hair?
Fitsugar shared some great Halloween ideas like this these Halloween treats.
if you need another idea check out our Halloween gluten free cupcakes just in case you missed them
Shape did a hilarious article on fitness inspired costumes
had some great ideas if you need a last minute costume idea
Dr. Oz discussed a prehistoric diet – one thing that we loved was he mentioned how dark leafy greens are a good source of protein and our favorite way to enjoy greens are in our green smoothies
loved this article from Yoga Journal – when self-care is yoga
think we all need this reminder every once in awhile
and one of the best things to read is Emily’s amazing birth stories!!! Emily you are beautiful and a strong mom that inspires us!
what good reads have you read lately?
till next time,
xoxo

very interesting thoughts. i have zero respect for dr. oz and i was a bit stunned to see him encourage legumes, soy based products & the caveman diet being plant based?! while this might work for someone vegan doing a quasi-paleo, this is not what paleo eats look like for crossfitters at all. i’ve ascribed to the paleo eating for nearly 2 years now. i started off in 2009 with mark’s daily apple doing primal (continuing to eat dairy) and then went dairy free in 2010. if i do have dairy now it’s very sporadic and it’s full fat (heavy cream, butter) or goat derived since it tends to upset my stomach and is mucous forming. you girls got me thinking hard already this saturday morning! good job

Yay! That’s me. Well, not the woman with gorgeous hair, but my name!
You girls have the perfect hair for that tutorial. I wish mine was naturally straight and shiny. I’ve realized that I have to straighten my hair one day with blow dryer & iron and the next day do the wave. Or else my hair takes 1 1/2 hours. I also can’t just blow dry or it’s too frizzy and dry looking. Sigh. I think I need a new blow dryer. Oh well, lots of random thoughts for hair!
Definitely try it, I’d love to see you girls with those waves!

Now that I’m studying nutrition, I find myself so much more into these types of discussions. Which is crazy since I was already so interested in nutrition before. I don’t think nutrition is a one size fits all scenario. We are all made up of different chemical components and our bodies process things so differently due to these differences. While I am a vegetarian that does not eat/drink dairy or soy (due to allergies and intolerances), I know there are core nutrients that my body needs from other sources. I do believe that we should eat a wide range of foods from all of the food groups, however, I just can’t eat meat for personal reasons. My family eats meat and I prepare meat for them, but it is limited, so I think it falls within a healthy range. Our bodies need the nutrients and finding the right path for you individually is so important. I appreciate you two sharing your journey in finding what’s right for your bodies so others can learn more about what works for them.

This could be a really heated topic—people tend to get really fired up about their nutritional beliefs!
I have read a lot on this topic, for professional and personal reasons. I think being extreme in any direction can lead to problems…but awareness and effort can compensate for most lacking nutrients in any diet.
The one thing I have a hard time reconciling with a veg diet is the connective tissue compounds that come with eating meat. For example, people take glucosamine supplements to support their joints, but if they would make soup from a turkey carcass or eat meat that was cooked on the bone (including fish—or eating sardines with bone in), they would get the entire family of glucosaminoglycans (including 100 compounds) that translate directly into the human form. However, if a veggie person doesn’t have joint problems, I don’t worry too much….

I don’t know if I’ll have time to look at that video, but I’ll definitely look at Janetha’s post and your comment–my brain spends so much time thinking about this kind of thing!
Green smoothie love is always a good thing, though! And I love that you have such a lively and respectful discussion on here between vegan and non-vegan folks.

I totally need to watch that hair tutorial! I suck at curling my hair!
As for the diets… I feel like ANY diet can be healthy/unhealthy depending on how you do it. I’m sure you could make a vegan diet super unhealthy, but I also think you could be super healthy eating “regularly” haha so I don’t think it’s right to say that one thing does or doesn’t work

Hey, great recommendations, love interesting reads! I read Alicia Silverstone’s ‘Kind Diet,’ but honestly, I didn’t really rate it – the writing felt a little forced and not genuine which was a shame. Some good recipes, but overall I was a little disappointed in it. Hopefully I’ll have better luck with a few of your reads

I think the vegan/carnivore thing would be really interesting to watch!! I believe that people can be totally healthy whether vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, carnivore, whatever- it all depends on the quality of food and what that individual person craves!
