carob favorites

by lori on November 15, 2011

hello friends! so happy to see everyone loving our pumpkin lentil socca muffins. Gary has been enjoying them too. I have been putting some in with his lunch for work.

today we are sharing our love of carob!

What is carob?

Carob is an edible tropical bean or pod that grows on carob trees in the Mediterranean region. People have been enjoying Carob for thousands of years.  Carob trees are also  known as ‘locust trees’.

carob powder is carob beans that are ground into powder. it looks similar to cocoa/cacao but  has a different taste. it does have a natural sweeter flavor to it then cacao powder does.

Is carob raw?

there is raw and toasted carob. we prefer the raw carob, but both are fine.

What does carob taste like?

has a unique malty flavor almost caramel like.

if you are new to carob, a great way to learn to love the flavor is do a mix of chocolate and carob powder in recipes. we do that a lot, like in our

baked grain free carob cocoa mini cakes

and our  raw carob brownie sandwich

Why we love carob?

carob is a great alternative to chocolate minus the caffeine.

you can substitute carob for cocoa in recipes but it will provide a different flavor.

we love the flavor of carob.  when we had carob for the first time we were not huge fans. but over time we learned to love it. and now you can say we are a little obsessed.

baked low sugar carob cookies

baked carob chia mini bundt cakes

here are some more of our favorite carob recipes:

baked carob socca donuts

semi raw mini pumpkin carob mousse cakes

  raw carob crepes

baked socca carob bread

 Where to buy carob powder?

Most health food stores carry it, or you can buy it online from places like Amazon, The Raw Food World, and Mountain Rose Herbs (which we have an affiliate with, check out our sidebar products we love)

Twins Question: what is your favorite way to enjoy carob? Have you ever had carob?

I’ve made carob, peanut butter smoothies. I think I’ve made a cake, too, but can’t remember for sure.

I wish I liked carob…but I just can’t like it…all the way. Maybe we just need more time to warm up to it. I’m such a cocoa fan!

Once my boyfriend’s sister gave me a couple carob-covered raisins when she was munching on them, but that’s my only experience! All your recipes looks fantastic and the flavor description sounds right up my alley.

I love carob! There’s only one place around here with powder and it’s an hour from where I live, and since I don’t have a car I hardly ever get it. But they have unsweetened carob chips at the co-op next to my college and they’re so delicious!

I would like more carob in my life. The only carob I’ve really had are the carob chips you can buy at TJ’s (which I think are covered in chocolate?). I’d like to experiment more…carob brownie sandwich sounds pretty amazing!
