holding plank pose

by Lori and Michelle on January 24, 2012

hello friends!

hopefully you all had the chance to make our cheezy quinoa casserole. no? well you must because we are coming over for dinner…we will bring the wine

since the last time we mentioned changing things up in our workouts to stay fit and active for Lori’s big day, we have been doing more yoga and slowly getting back into our HIIT style workouts.

Workout recap -

if you have been following our blog for awhile you know that we workout from home and love interval workouts. well these past few months we have eased off of them due to skin issues.

we took a break from our HIIT (bodyrock style) workouts because we thought they might have been causing inflammation in our skin.

with all our recent research and new eating habits that we are testing out, we are feeling pretty good about bringing them back into our routine. we miss HIIT.

again this is just for us, everyone is different.

when we do high intensity workouts we see the best results in our bodies. plus just love quick HIIT workouts for our busy schedule.

we have a plan of attack to get our arms looking sexy for Lori’s wedding day (and who doesn’t want toned arms?) we shall share more on that here soon. her wedding is in 14 weeks! yikes, we better get to work.

today we are focusing on planks. planks are one exercise we are doing to help tone up our arms. although planks are a great full body workout too.

we are doing another challenge like our last FitFluential handstand challenge. this time holding plank.

we got our inspiration from this amazing lady and the rest of our FitFluential family.

here is a video of Lori and I holding plank for 2 minutes. by the end of the first minute our bodies start to shake. but we are planning on sticking with it everyday. because we feel 2 minutes a day is one step closer to reaching our fitness goals! are you with us in doing plank everyday?

even if you just hold it for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, etc doesn’t matter. maybe set up your gymboss timer to intervals.

fitfluential fitness

and if planks are not your thing feel free to pick something else to try to do everyday! maybe push-ups, squats, etc, the idea here is just to do something and be proud of yourself that you are strengthening your body and your mind in same way!

holding plank pose for toned armshere is Lori holding plank yesterday after our yoga and arm session.

this week our goal is holding plank for 2 minutes and increase each week.

now as we mentioned we have been avid followers of bodyrock. but as some may have noticed things have a changed a lot over there. actually the changes starting happening months ago about the same time we started cutting back on them. yes one reason was because of our skin, and trying to heal it. but another reason was because we were not liking what was going on. we feel in love with Zuzana, her passion for fitness, her energy, and yes her beauty. there are  many Zuzana haters out there, which is fine, but we are not. we feel anyone who helps inspires people to move, to love their body, to care of themselves such be acknowledged for that not criticized.

we still love bodyrock. and the whole message around it – doing intense home workouts. and plan to do their workouts from time to time.

if you want us to share more thoughts on this please let us know. for now we will leave it at that.

Twins Question: Well really not a question, just would love to hear what exercise you plan to challenge yourself everyday to reach your goals!

Since I’m banned from running right now, I’m trying to do Bobbi’s Bootcamps every single day, with abs added at the end, which normally includes a plank. I can currently hold mine for three minutes, so I know you can for sure get past two minutes! You’ll sweat buckets but I always feel so accomplished!

haha thanks Melissa, we will get to that 3 minutes ;) and oh yes we already felt the body temperature rising with two mins,

katie @KatieDid January 24, 2012 at 10:06 am

I love bodyrock, and still do the workouts about once a week when I can’t make it to the gym or crossfit or when its just too cold out to do anything else. Nothing beats a hard, efficient workout right in my living room seriously!

You girls are SO hardcore. I hate planks (so need to work on them!). Not a fan at all…once I’m at two minutes I will be very proud of myself! You go!

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather January 24, 2012 at 10:14 am

I love your plank challenge and the fact that you two do it together. My goals are to stay as active as I can these next 4 months and taking every day at a time. I want to keep my muses in check so when the big event (marathon??? Haha) gets here I’m ready for it.

And your cheezy quinoa is on my list for next weeks meals! Can’t wait to try it :)

I feel the same about BodyRock! I actually never did their workouts, but I incorporated Zuzana’s exercises into my workouts and I loved Zuzana’s posts and coffee talks. When she left, I didn’t think it was a big deal, as I was NOT one of those people who worship her, and I did like it when the hosts changed on BR for every workout, but after a while, right when Lisa-Marie became the permanent host, I wasn’t feeling it anymore. The atmosphere is not the same anymore!
So, that being said, I’m excited about Zuzana being back online and I’m gonna follow her for sure! If your readers want to check her out: her FB & Youtube account :)

i am already doing planks, i have been back on working out for 3 weeks exactly (so i am on my way to the 4th), i started with 2mn basic plank and 1mn on each side, no i do 2mn basic, 2mn left, 2mn right, 2mn basic, 2mn left, 2mn right so 12 minutes total. i am quite of how i improved my times, and did not think that i would be able to do that one day as my arms really are really really thin. for now i am staying at 12 minutes because it is already a lot, and once i will be comfortable with this time maybe i will add like 30 seconds or so, from time to time.

Lori and Michelle January 24, 2012 at 1:34 pm

wow Lou that is impressive! way to go!!!

Rachel @ Eat, Learn, Discover! January 24, 2012 at 12:43 pm

You ladies are amazing! Maybe one day i’ll do a 2 minute plank. My exercise goal right now is to find a strength training routine to be fit and strong all over. Which, actually is now including doing yoga at least once or twice a week – something I NEVER thought I would be into. I plan to make every strength workout uncomfortable – not painful, but the good kind of burn. I want to keep increasing the weight I lift, and the number of pushups or squats I can do, or the time I can hold a yoga pose.
Also, thank you for bringing it to my attention that Zuzana is sharing workouts again! Her’s are the best, I’m excited to try the new ones :-)

I love doing planks! They make me feel strong. I have been roped into doing a tobata workout tonight. This scares me! Planks will be involved. I can’t believe it’s only 14 weeks until the wedding. I’m sure the excitement is really building!

I’ve been doing #plankaday for a while now. I’ve also added in pushups (I’m horrible at them and am still doing incline pushups since I have NO upper body strength). And I can’t forget about my burpees!

Ilana January 24, 2012 at 8:13 pm

holding those forearm planks will for sure get you up into forearm stand sooner rather than later :) i love planks. you girls are rocking it! lori, in that last pic, try bringing your elbows a little bit closer together so theyre stacked directly under your shoulders and feel like you’re pulling your elbows together to wrap the shoulder blades around the rib cage and it will help stabilize the shoulders a little more. I’m dealing with stupid tendinitis now because I always hold one of my arms too far our of alignment and it’s a tiny thing that makes a massive difference!

Do much equipment on bodyrock and it’s overwhelming to me. Lost in the workout world.

Lori and Michelle January 24, 2012 at 9:36 pm

Aubrey bodyrock workouts a few months ago were not like that, they were easy and simple with barely equipment. hopefully they bring those styles back.

Z.Grimm January 24, 2012 at 9:01 pm

I started a yoga challenge, and am trying to keep up with it. Not the best at it so far – I’m super shakey at the moment – but I’m trying, right? I’ve tried planks but they hurt a bum shoulder of mine so much (car accident injury). Also, downward facing dog is impossible for the same reason. Makes me feel like a weakling that I can’t do them. :( I’m still trying to alternate yoga with walking two miles a day (at least!).

Awesome job!!!!

I did this challenge with my clients a few years ago. I trained 2 girls getting ready for their weddings and some family members. The all started at a very low fitness level, not ever working out regularly. The mothers of one of the brides started with planing for 15 seconds. Guess what…after 4 months I had her holding a plank for 2 minutes!!!! She was a rockstar!!! Her daughter did 1 minute 20 seconds which was also awesome but how great is it that her MOM beat her in the challenge! Totally inspiring!
