Happy Monday luvs,

How was everyone’s weekend? Glorious I hope :)

Well Michelle and I had a busy weekend though we did manage to relax a little last night.

As we mentioned earlier this week we wanted to share our grasshopper pie with you all. The one that we got to enjoy on our birthday!

may 2010 p2r blog 191

Are you ready?

If you love mint and something not too sweet than you will love this mint pie!

Pure2Raw Recipe: Raw Grasshopper Pie

Ingredients:

Crust-

  • 1/4 cup carob powder (or you can use cocoa powder)
  • 1/2 cup coconut flakes (or you can use any nut meal you like)
  • 1 tbsp alcohol free vanilla
  • 2 tbsp date paste (or you can use any liquid sweetener you like)

Directions:

Place all ingredients into a food processor or blender and pulse till combined. *If you already have coconut flour or nut meal please feel free to hand stir this all together

Press crust dough in a 6 inch cake pan or springform pan would work too.

Filling:

Mint Layer-

  • 2 large avocados
  • 2 tbsp sunflower lecithin (or soy lecithin, xanthan gum,or  guar gum of your choice though the amount for the recipe may vary depending on what you use, I would suggest starting with 1 tsp)
  • 2 tbsp irish moss paste (this is optional but it provides this layer with great texture) * you may use gelatin if you prefer
  • 1 tbsp alcohol free vanilla
  • 2 tsp mint extract (you may add more or less depending on how minty you like your pie to be)

White Creme layer-

  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 cup lucuma powder (for more substitutions check out here)
  • 5 packets of stevia
  • Few drops of liquid chorophyll (to help with green color)
  • 1/8-1/4 tsp spirulina (additional nutrition value and helps with color too)
  • 2 tbsp water

Directions:

For both layers place your ingredients into a blender and blend till smooth (may use a food processor if you do not have a blender).

Putting the whole pie together!

may 2010 p2r blog 181

Assembly:

  • Take your pan that is already filled with crust and spoon a little of the white creme layer down. Place in freezer to set about 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove from freezer and place the mint layer on top of white creme layer. Place back into freezer to set about 30 –45 minutes.
  • And for the last layer top the remaining white creme layer on top of mint layer. And decorate with cacao nibs if you would like.
  • Place the whole grasshopper pie back into the freezer to let set.

When ready to eat the grasshopper pie take out of freezer about 20-30 minutes to let thaw a little. Or may eat pie cold :)

New Cookie Dough Tahini Bar Recipe

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 08:45 AM

Hey luvs

Happy Friday!! Cannot believe it has been another week…and it is only going to get busier for us over here. The is the busy season for our bakery. ; )

Well remember this guy

feb 2010 pure2raw blog more 131

Our Gluten free Vegan and Nut free Cookie Pie

Well we tweaked the recipe some.

Check out our new Cookie Dough Tahini Bar.

march 2010 p2r blog 438

Pure2raw Recipe: Cookie Dough Tahini Bar

Bottom Layer

  • ¼ cup coconut flour
  • 2 tbsp maca (or more coconut flour or mesquite)
  • 2 tbsp vanilla
  • 2 tbsp date paste
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 30 drops stevia*
  • 2 tbsp coconut butter (not oil)
  • 2 tbsp cacao nibs (or chocolate chips)

Chocolate Layer

  • ¼ cup carob or cacao (or 2 tbsp of both)
  • 2 tbsp vanilla
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 30 drops stevia*
  • *We use SweetLeaf liquid stevia
  • Sprinkle with coconut flakes.

march 2010 p2r blog 451

It is easy!! You just hand stir it together! And no dehydrating needed!

Spread the bottom cookie layer into a pan, we used a 6×6

march 2010 p2r blog 413

We sprinkled coconut flakes on bottom of pan to make it easier to come out!

march 2010 p2r blog 415

Then spread chocolate layer on top, followed by coconut flakes, if desired.

march 2010 p2r blog 426

And place in fridge till ready to devour enjoy ; )

march 2010 p2r blog 441

This recipe does have a little tahini taste, which we love, so if you do not prefer a tahini flavor, I would reduce it down and up the coconut butter. You may do all coconut butter, but we prefer the texture the tahini helps give the cookie layer, keeps it more soft and gooey. : )

march 2010 p2r blog 447

We just love tahini! It gave this recipe a nice creaminess, earthy, and not too sweet ;) Perfect in our opinion!

march 2010 p2r blog 450

Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do!!

Got to get back in the kitchen.

Till next time,

The Twins

Twins favorite things

Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 09:59 AM

Happy Sunday everyone!!

I have been up for 2 hours and have done nothing besides writing this long and useful post!!! Don’t you just love Sundays!! An official excuse to be lazy, right??

Anyways our friend Averie asked us to share our favorite things. It has been a topic we wanted to do just never got around to it, so when she mentioned it we thought now is a great time to share.

Twin’s Favorite Things – again these are from our own experiences you can make your own call

How we go about getting our ingredients. We do most of our shopping online although if we are low on certain ingredient and we know a local health food store around us sells it we will just by it from them. We try to buy in bulk as well because in the long run it saves you time and money.

1) Coconut Oil -   best quality and tasting  - Artisana Premier Organics coconut oil and coconut butter

best for your money – one gallon tub from Sun Foods

best convenient – sold in most health food stores Nutiva

Other high quality coconut oil brands we have been enjoying Vivapura and Virgin Coconut oil De Coco Creme

2) Best online stores to shop: how we shop the most are Natural Zing, Amazon, Navitas Naturals, and Mountain Rose Herbs. For specialty items Raw Food World and Sun Food.

What we have been know to buy at Natural Zing: MSM powder, kelp noodles, coconut oil, tahini, maca, lucuma, yacon syrup, chia seeds, spirulina, raw cacao powder, raw cacao nibs, camu camu, and nuts and seeds, hemp seeds

Amazon: coconut water, Artisana and Navitas Natural brand products, dehydrator, vitamix, spiralizer, mandoline, nutritional yeast

Navitas Naturals: chia seeds, raw cacao, sprouted flax meal, yacon syrup, mesquite, maca, hemp seeds, lucuma and stevia

Mountain Rose Herbs: cinnamon, turmeric, sea salt, maca, chia seeds, chorella, spirulina, dulse flakes, any spice really, green tea (for making our kombucha tea)

3) Hemp products: Best overall  Manitoba Harvest (can be pricey)

Best second choice Nutiva

Other overall decent hemp protein Ruth’s Hemp (we get from  Natural Zing) or buying in bulk from Whole foods or Mountain Rose Herbs

4) Stevia – powder we like the best is Sweet Leaf the packets (which you can find in most heath food stores)

Second best is – KAL Pure Stevia Extract liquid (we get from health food stores)

Third best is – Stevia powder from Navitas Naturals (this is an acquired taste)

We find to like most Stevia products but we prefer liquid forms of it the best. We know for some Stevia is hard to get used to though we have been using if for over 3 years and we hardly notice it anymore. To us it is worth the after taste or getting used to factor from it having no calories and for us it is truly the best sugar substitute. We use it a lot in our bakery and personally!

5) Other random ingredients we use and where to find them

Nutritional yeast – most health food stores sell it (RedStar is our favorite)and Amazon

Irish Moss and Sunflower lecithin – I mentioned this yesterday

Florida Crystals Organic Sugar – we use for making kombucha and water kefirs (most health food stores sell this brand)

Native Forest Unsweetened Classic coconut milk – again most health food stores should sell this

Living Harvest – hemp milk (unsweetened)

Pacific Foods – Almond milk (unsweetened) and Hazelnut milk, and Rice milk

Again how we go about purchasing these items varies every time we need something. Some times it comes down to money, convenience or brand loyalty. It really all depends what we are shopping for and what we are low on. It also comes down to personal preference and money.

This great lady also has great tips on buying in bulk. Also we know because we have done it that most health food stores allow you to buy in bulk (cases) like Whole Foods, Earth Fare, and any local health food store in your area. Just go and ask the customer service area and they should be able to help you out. Buying in bulk is great especially for a family with lots of mouths to feed! Mountain Rose Herbs again is a great place to do this as well because they offer bulk discounts to everyone and their products are organic :)

We hope this list of our favorites helps you along your journey of finding great healthy additions to your lifestyle like is has ours! Please let us know if you have any specific questions.

And Lori was correct in her guess with what our dinner was from last night! Kelp noodles though we a great twist :)   And speaking of this lovely lady she is hosting a great giveaway – an ice cream maker :)   If you get an ice cream maker you can start making delicious ice cream like this

Cookie dough Ice Cream

Back to our dinner:

Kabocha Kelp Noodles

We blended in our roasted Kabocha from earlier this week add in some salt, leftover sage that we roasted with the squash and some water. Threw it all into the blender and blended till creamy though ours we kept on the thick side :)

Than created a ‘green’ sauce to over the top, you know us with our greens! Green sauce was a blend of tahini, yacon syrup, apple cider vinegar, parsley, shallot, sunflower lecithin and water! Blend till creamy. And pour on top of kelp noodles and kabocha squash mixture.

IMG_3814We just mixed it all together and topped with more fresh parsley :)

IMG_3823

IMG_3832Amazing! We think all squash lovers would approve of this sauce :) A great way to end a Saturday night. One reason why we created this dish was to show a customer at the farmers market yesterday morning what else to do with squash. She mentioned she does not know what else to do with winter squashes and that’s when we thought of using it as pasta ‘tomato’ sauce! Although we feel this would work with any veggie dish!

We got lots of goodies lined up today for the big game! Super bowl day! We can’t wait to show you all what we come up with tomorrow ;)

Cheers from the Twins. We have no favorite for which team to win we just want a good game to watch and the commercials!

Till next time,

The Twins

Twins ingredient tips for recipes

Friday, November 13, 2009 at 02:00 PM

Hello friends,

We wanted to go over some of the ingredients that we have been using in our recipes as well as provide you all with some substitutes.

Now many of these ingredients may be new to you or yes a little more expensive than SUGAR. But the health benefits out weight all that : ) We are fortunate enough that with our bakery we get to play around with these ingredients. So if you ever get the chance to play around with these ingredients we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

At the end of the post we provide where you can get all these goodies!

Ingredient and substitution lesson with the twins:

grab a paper and pen ;)

Ready-

Here we go-

Coconut oil

Full of lauric acid, provides energy for the body, good fat, great for the metabolism and thyroid.

Common use: baking, cooking, face, smoothies, sauces, puddings, sports drinks, bars, any desserts

Substitutes: olive oil, soy butter (if you can tolerate soy), ghee (for non-vegans), palm oil

Yacon Syrup

Low-glycemic sugar, lower in calories then most sweeteners, taste like molasses and caramel, can improve digestive health due to containing prebiotic (which is the food for the good bacteria)

** yacon also comes in powder form

** it does have an unique flavor so it may take a few times to get used to the flavor although we LOVE IT!

Common use: replace honey or maple syrup, or any liquid sweetener (we like to use it more than agave because it has more health benefits than agave), add it to anything that you want a little bit more sweetness like smoothies, puddings, any desserts, fruit, sauces, dressings, nut milks

Substitutes: maple syrup, molasses, dark or light agave, honey

Lucuma powder

Low-glycemic sugar substitute, rich maple-like flavor, full of vitamins and minerals like beta caratone, niacin, calcium and iron

Common use: great in ice creams, yogurts, desserts, smoothies, puddings, pies, nut milks

Substitutes: maca powder, yacon powder, stevia (though will have to alter the ratio in recipes), nut flour, coconut flour, rice protein powder or hemp protein (though will need to add some other sweetness to the recipes)

Maca powder

Rich in amino acids, phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals, increases energy, can help with endurance, supports the immune system and adrenal function (helps with stress) and we just love the flavor!! Gives things a malted flavor : )

Common use: desserts, pudding, smoothies, yogurt, ice cream, nut milks

Substitutes: lucuma, yacon powder, nut flour, coconut flour, rice protein and hemp powder (these will alter the taste and texture)

* we have discussed maca here before

Stevia

Zero- glycemic level, zero calorie, can improve digestion, excellent choice for those watching sugar and calories, comes in liquid or powder form

Common uses: drinks, smoothies, coffee, tea, any dessert (will have to alter the wet to dry ration), yogurt, puddings

Substitutes: although there really is no substitute if you using it for the reasons listed, although all the sweeteners list here would work, just have to alter the recipe

Dates/date paste

Natural sweetener, high in glucose (a carb for fuel), rich in fiber, full of calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, sulfur

Common uses: desserts, sauces, dressings, smoothies, puddings, snacks, bars, granola

Substitutes: dried figs, dried apricots, plus the other sweeteners listed above

Please keep in mind  when you make substitutions in any recipe, not just ours, that we ask you to please use some common sense ;)   If they batter is dry add more liquid and vice versa. Example, if you use high fats nuts (walnuts)  in your recipe, you can use less liquid due to the natural oil from the nuts. Or if you prefer stevia as your sweetener, whether liquid or powdered, you will need to “make up”  for the volume missing, so either add more dry ingredients or liquid.

We hope these tips help, and you have any questions with using these different ingredients please email the twins at twins@pure2raw.com. We would love to help you out : )

Our favorite places to get our ingredients:

Here are some new places we have come across, we have not tried them yet, but look good!

And to continue on with our dessert theme week today is

RAW SMORE’S

Now Matthew Kenney has his recipe of this classic in his book Entertaining in the Raw. And our friend Shannon Marie has done her own twist on this dessert.

And we wanted to get in on the action…. We will see this later what we did. It is still in production. We will get the recipe and pictures to you as soon as it is ready!!!

Till next time,

The Twins

Castor Oil Pack Detox

Monday, August 10, 2009 at 09:16 AM

Good Monday morning everyone,

Well we  did manage to throw together a nice salad last night for dinner with some of our raw herb crackers (courtesy of Pure2 raw). It was so nice to have something crunchy to eat with our salad! We love our raw crackers : )

Dandelion leaves, argula (from local farmer), avocado, herb crackers, and left over veggies from lunch

Dandelion leaves, arugula (from local farmer), avocado, herb crackers, and left over veggies from lunch

We did the castor oil pack detox last night! Both of us rubbed the oil all over our bellies and wrapped the plastic wrap over our stomachs. Then placed a hand towel over that then finally the heat pad. Oh this might sound weird or silly but it was so relaxing!

After a nice relaxing night it was hard to get up this morning we will admit!  We did not what to face the day yet : )

But busy Monday as usual, so we made ourselves a simple juice to get us going.

Grapefruit, apples, kale, lime juice

2 Grapefruits , 3 apples, 6 stalks of kale, 2 limes

Next we headed for the gym.

Today’s workout

40 minutes of uphill walking:

5 minutes incline 3 at 3.6 mph
8 minutes incline 4 at 3.6 mph
8  minutes incline 5 at 3.6 mph
9 minutes incline 6 at 3.6 mph
10 minutes incline 7 at 3.6 mph

Now this may seem easy but this uphill climb we pump our arms, so they are not resting on the treadmill. This really works your whole body and closely resembles walking outside up a hill. In the past we used to walk at inclines 1o and up and 4.0 mph while holding the treadmill, but lately been really wanting to push our selves we have been doing smaller hills (hoping to build up) with no hands balancing us on the treadmill. Now both ways are good for exercise, but we feel when we do not rest hands on treadmill we get more of an intense workout. Our legs really burn!! So give it a try next time at the gym.

Which way do you prefer? Do you like walking uphill?

And when we got back from the gym we did some push ups, ab work, and our new yoga/calisthenics routine. More leg burn out!!! Michelle can be pushy and really make you go till you feel the burn!

After our leg workout session ended we made a delicious smoothie. Though we had to work for it, but it was well worth the effort!!!

Fresh coconuts!!

Fresh coconuts!!

Nothing beats fresh coconuts!! We went to the Asian supermarket yesterday and picked us up a few for the week.

IMG_7953

Delicious Green Smoothie: 2 coconuts (meat and water), 3 packets of stevia, 3 tsp blue green algae, 2 tsp spirulina 2 tsp vanilla, 20 fresh mint leaves, 1 tbsp coconut oil

IMG_7954

Blend and enjoy!! Oh and we did, perfect way to start the day : )

Michelle ready to enjoy her smoothie

Michelle ready to enjoy her smoothie

Now we are finally starting to get our energy to help us get through the remaining afternoon. Cheers!

Till next time,

Twins – Catch-up

Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 06:40 PM

Well, sorry we have been out of touch today and yesterday. We wanted to do a post this morning on how the rest of our day was after our long run and how we are doing today. Though, we got busy with our company because we started a new farmers market today in addition to the current one we do on Thursdays! Yes, we know we are crazy. Though you have to do what you have to do to grow your company : )  Haven’t we all had to put things that are on our to do list on the back burner so we can get other things done first? It happens. It’s a part of life and being a business owner!

Therefore we did not have time this morning to write a aftermath post. Here is a quick over view: after our delicious post workout shake we made ourselves a large smoothie packed with blueberries, maca, bee pollen, camu camu, stevia, vanilla, lemon, kale.

IMG_7643

It was alright, not the best tasting smoothie we have made but it helped fuel our bodies for the rest of the day. We were busy with work, running last minute errands, and prepping for our two farmers markets today. We enjoyed a nice huge salad for our early dinner. And since on our run days our metabolism is already high we tend to have a bit more to eat compared to non-run days. So we enjoyed a delicious avocado chocolate pudding with some fresh mint and lavender to calm us down for the evening. So good! This pudding is so easy to make and one of the first raw recipes we made when going raw last year! Highly recommend it.

As we mentioned before we are reading the Thrive book by Brendan Brazier. Well we are not reading this book has fast as we would like due to our extremely busy schedules. Though, we read it whenever we get a chance. And must say it is a GREAT read!! Highly recommend it to any athlete or someone who is looking for a new outlook on food and fitness. Brendan is such an inspiration to us because we too want to show others that eating raw can be achieved by anyone and that athletes can be successful in their sports too! We hope that our experiences and struggles will inspire you to re-think your current fitness routine and food plan. We don’t say diet because we do not like that word, it has been abused too much in this industry. You have to look at it as a lifestyle change, a change that is not only going to improve your health but also your overall well-being. Who doesn’t what that? LOL. Anyways, the Thrive Diet book is awesome! We will post more on our favorite topics from the book soon.

Quick re-cap of food today to keep us going on a very busy day.

Well today we have two farmers markets to bake for and work at which means not much water in-take today nor workout nor well-planned out meals (because we decide to do this other market last minute and didn’t have time to prep our meals for today) It happens! So you just do want you can do and be happy with it. That is exactly what we did which we are so proud. Because typically in our past we always we have our meals prepped and ready to go, and would get very upset if we got off schedule. That was a big no no for us in the old days.

Now, we are really trying to just go with the flow of life and eat and drink when our bodies tells us. And to do what you can when you can, and don’t beat yourself up if you get off track. This creates more stress, and we all know that we do not need any more stress in our lives. LOL

Early Breakfast was: lemon water

Mid morning: large detox smoothie ( water, figs, apples, pears, parsley, lemon, turmeric, and ginger)

Lunch (courtesy of Michelle, thanks sis- you are a great chef- lunch was AWESOME!!!!): collard green wrap filled with our “mock” chicken salad and side of fig blueberry balls.

IMG_7679

IMG_7684Chef Michelle would like to discuss the recipe:

I was in rush so I quickly went through the fridge to see what we had to make this. Luckily we had already soaked sunflower seeds ready to go, so I threw in about 1 cup sunflower seeds. Then roughly chopped up 4 stalks of celery, 2 scallions, 1/3 of a large black radish (which I roughly peeled), 4 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp tahini (the secret ingredient), 1 tsp dulse flakes, small handful of fresh parsley. And pulsed it in food processor till in small chunks, or till desired texture. That easy!!! Just placed the mock chicken salad into collard greens. YUM!!!

Snack: 3 slices of our Pure 2 Raw swiss chard black sesame seed onion flatbread

Late Dinner: Juice

Cucumber, celery, beet, ginger, romaine, and turmeric

Lori- your shirt matches your juice!

Lori- your shirt matches your juice!

When we got back from the market and we had some leftover slices of our carrot cake and double layer chocolate cake… so we treated ourselves to a few bites of each! Yum! Ummm, still being a little hungry we each had one of our raw carob cookie and one raw lemon cupcake! YUMMMM

IMG_7692

Today we both felt great after our long run yesterday and a day full of baking and standing on our feet all day both in the kitchen then at farmers markets. We definitely have noticed that since we have went more raw that our bodies do recover faster from workouts, less sore, and still have energy the next day to keep moving! No more laying around here! :)

If you are considering going raw and/or wanting to incorporate more raw foods into your diet that is great! Please let us know if you ever have any questions or concerns. We still have our ups and downs with the raw lifestyle transition but both of us are extremely happy of where we in our lives and are excited of where we will be in the future. We know you will be too!

Till next time. Remember to love yourself and be happy of who you are!

Dealing with skin issues while eating raw

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 04:43 PM

Do you suffer from skin problems? If so please give us your feedback because we are both our experiencing skin breakouts. We are very frustrated because we have been eating majority a raw foods lifestyle, and everything we have read mentioned that eating raw foods will help the appearance of your skin. Eating live natural foods will help give your skin a glow…blemish free skin….okay then what are we doing wrong?

We eat about 90-95% raw foods. We are going on our 2nd year of eating this way and we thought at first it was part of the detox. Getting rid of the old toxins from our previous way of eating, but we are still struggling. We go through periods were our skin starts improving and then the next day we will have a new pimple or two. What is going on?

We drink lots of water throughout the day, skin brush, workout regularly, we have a juice about once a day, eat huge green salads, and have one or 2 green smoothies a day. We have cut back on our sugar, which we thought was the problem still, just rely on fresh fruit and stevia, and occasionally dried dates. We try to rotate our foods as best we can, although our diet is limited due to our food allergies and sensitivities.

We eat tons of greens…kale, collard greens, swiss chard, parsley are some of our favorites. We love our lemon and lime to use in smoothies, juices, and salad dressings. We do enjoy hemp seeds, flax seeds, and chia seeds. We occasionally eat tahini, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. When we first went raw we ate a lot of nuts and seeds, which we noticed made us tired. So we have cut back on nuts, but are thinking about bringing them back more into our diets, any suggestions?

As we mentioned we are not 100% raw because we run our own gluten free vegan peanut free bakery, which we also make raw goodies as well. Majority of our products are also corn free, sugar free (most things are sweetened with agave nectar), and soy free.  So we do occasionally have some of our goodies, mostly when we are trying out a new recipe or making improvements to current recipes.

We did a post on face products that we have tired to help us out with our skin. We understand that beauty comes starts inside, so we do not understand what our bodies are trying to tell us. Are we still detoxing? Are we eating something we shouldn’t be? We have talked and read about other people struggle with skin while eating raw foods, so it is somewhat nice to know we are not alone, yet still is frustrating. Although we are determined to figure out what is happening with our skin.

We have decided to make a few changes to our diet and face care routine. First we are going to try not to have any soaked and sprouted quinoa, buckwheat, and millet. Secondly try to eat more seeds and nuts, not in heavy amounts but increase from what we eat now. Thirdly try to increase our water, even though we get about 60 oz of it a day. Next we are going to rinse our face in the mornings with just water followed by skin brushing and use The Solution on our face. And lastly, at night wash our face with coconut oil. Yep coconut oil, maybe rotate in coconut butter. Trying to remember less is more : ) when it comes to putting products on our face.

So we will see what happens. We plan to give these changes a week before we make any adjustments, so here is what we had today:

We worked out first thing this morning, a full body lift followed by a little yoga.

Then enjoyed a purple smoothie that was full of coconut water, Sun is Shining, Vega protein, and blueberries.

IMG_7610

Later was a juice: celery, cucumber, romaine, ginger, turmeric, lime

Then we did some playing around in the kitchen to create some new raw recipes for Pure 2 Raw. We made carob cookies, carob cupcakes, and lemon coconut cupcakes….yes all raw and delicious, it was hard to not to keep eating them.

Our salad was next on the menu.

IMG00269A mix of dandelion leaves and red chard topped with avocado, pumpkin seeds, and fresh lime juice and zest with some apple cider vinegar. We ate a few bites and realized we were missing the most important ingredient…nutritional yeast :)

Our last meal of the day is another smoothie: blackberries, coconut oil, chia seeds, cinnamon, turmeric, maca, fresh basil and fresh parsley (which we grow ourselves), bee pollen, lemon juice, and stevia.

We both overall felt good today. We did get in about 10 cups of water. We got a big run tomorrow morning, although it is storming outside so hopefully this does not ruin our plans for running.

Do you love your skin? If so, why, what do you feel is your secret? favorite product?

Till next time

Hip Hop Yoga

Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 08:41 PM

Have you heard of or done hip hop yoga?

Hip Hop Yoga is one of the newest yoga routines that is becoming big. Even celebrities like Reese Witherspoon enjoys her class of hip hop yoga according to Yoga Dork . It is mix of hip hop music, yoga and dance. We have not tried hip hop yoga until today we thought we would give it a try.

Our typical yoga is more slow and meditative. Although we sometimes mix in yoga with calisthenics, similar to the routine of Jennifer Aniston did in Self Magazine in December 2006.

Hip hop yoga is energy dance party that is athletically thrilling and spiritually soothing, so this really appealed to us. When we are looking for a quick powerful workout we mix up our yoga routine with other mini workouts like push-ups, jumping jacks, etc. We put some of our favorite feel good, motivational music and have fun. Cher is one of our favorite artists to listen to because very empowering songs, like “Song for the lonely,” and “All or nothing now.”

We enjoyed our hip hop yoga session today and would do it again. Both of us felt invigorated and empowered. We do our yoga sessions at our home because the yoga classes offered at our gym seem to conflict with our schedules.  But if your gym or yoga studio offers hip hop yoga we would recommend you give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Here is what the twins at ate today:

Breakfast started with our warm glass of lemon water followed by a bowl of fresh blackberries, figs, and a granny smith apple. Our bodies were craving fruit so we listened and felt great. It was simple and sweet!

Mid-morning snack was 2 slices of banana bread from Twin Cakes Bakery.

Then a little later we were still hungry so had ourselves one slice of Pure2 raw onion spinach bread. It is so addicting!!

Workout was 45 minutes of hip hop yoga!!

Lunch (more like post workout shake) was a very powerful green smoothie. We decided to give our new Hemp Protein powder with E3Live & Maca that we received the other day a try. The other additions to the smoothie were romaine, coconut water, stevia, cinnamon, acai powder, and fresh lemon juice. This was a strong flavored smoothie, which just made us feel more empowered. Nothing like having a good yoga workout followed by a power smoothie. The reason for the power is the Hemp with E3Live&Maca. Hemp is a great source of protien, maca contains many trace minerals, good for endurance, improves energy levels, and concentration, and E3Live is a high-potency Blue-green algae that has more protein & chlorophyll than any food and it increases energy, enhances brain function, and raises your sense of well-being. Yep a power smoothie!!

IMG_7503 Mid afternoon snack part 1:

We made ourselves a raw cacao mint “coffee” drink. We love to make up raw “coffee” drinks when we need that extra boost. We used to be big coffee drinkers, so having something similar to it helps keep us away from coffee. The one we made today was full of water, mesquite, raw cacao powder, mint, stevia, and lucuma. It was smooth and simple!

Snack Part 2:

We were still a bit hungry and wanted to be full for the farmers market, so we had 2 more slices of our Pure2 raw onion spinach bread with our pumpkin pesto and a few slices of swiss chard. It was satisfying and simple!

Dinner was a large salad…and we ate it all. It was a mix of green lettuces, dandelion leaves, leeks, radishes, and simple dressing of fresh lemon juice, yacon syrup, apple cider vinegar, and nutritional yeast. Yes nutritional yeast is on all our salads : ) the twins cannot get enough of this stuff. The salad was simple and filling!
